COLUMBUS, Ohio – Simply put, what a day for the Capital University women's lacrosse team.
This afternoon, the Comets dismantled Ohio Northern by a final score of 23-6 to officially clinch a share of the OAC Regular Season Championship, while also honoring a group of eight seniors and graduate students who have truly imprinted their names on the legacy of Capital women's lacrosse.
Capital, now 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the OAC, got an offensive explosion from
Brooke Delara who scored eight goals and handed out three assists, good for 11 points.
Elsewhere on the offensive side of the ball, Capital got four-goal games from the usual subjects in
Grace Osborn and
Luci Kanowsky, while also getting two goals from
Dylan Smith.
Maddy Radanof,
Avery Hart,
Katie Page,
Julia Foresi, and
Skyla Caito each scored once.
Delara (3), Osborn (2), Foresi, Kanowsky, and Caito all tallied assists. Osborn also led the way in both draw controls (6) and ground balls (7) in the game.
Molly Searles led the team with three caused turnovers. As a team, Capital committed just 10 turnovers in the game, and directly caused 11 of ONU's 26 cough-ups.
Bee Kuehn made four saves in the cage.
SENIOR DAY
The Comets recognized seniors
Maddy Radanof,
Molly Searles,
Hanna Searles,
Katie Page,
Brooke Delara,
Luci Kanowsky,
Kori Barrett, and
Bee Kuehn prior to the start of the game, paying homage to the contributions the eight of them made to the program over their Capital tenures.
OAC CHAMPS
With their win today, Capital clinches at least a share of the OAC Regular Season Championship, marking the first for the women's lacrosse team in the program's nine-year history of competition. Capital is just the third different school to lay claim to the regular season title, joining Mount Union and John Carroll. With a win over Heidelberg on Wednesday, Capital will claim outright ownership to the Regular Season crown, thus earning the right to host throughout the OAC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got on the board first with unassisted goals from
Brooke Delara and
Katie Page just over three minutes into the contest. The Polar Bears responded with a goal from Keaghan Burden, but five straight from Capital would create the separation needed to set the tone for the game. The run of goals came from Delara (3),
Luci Kanowsky, and
Dylan Smith.
Two goals from ONU's Elizabeth Graham interrupted the Capital flurry, but a strike from
Julia Foresi just before the first quarter break got Cap back on track.
In the second quarter, Capital outscored ONU 7-1, courtesy of goals from Kanowsky (2),
Grace Osborn (2), Delara (2), and
Avery Hart.
The third quarter was once again all Capital as the Comets put four past the Polar Bears while keeping ONU off the scoreboard in the period. Goals came from Kanowsky, Osborn (2), and
Dylan Smith.
The game was signed, sealed, and delivered in the fourth quarter, as
Maddy Radanof and
Skyla Caito scored quickly, putting the Comets ahead 21-4. After two ONU goals,
Brooke Delara finished the job with two more goals for herself, ending the game 23-6.
UP NEXT
The Capital women look to complete their perfect regular season next Wednesday, April 27, against the Student Princes of Heidelberg University. Worthy to note, the Comets sit at 99 wins in program history, thus a win over the Student Princes would give Capital their 100th win in program history – all of which have come in the head coaching tenure of
Stacey Florence.
