Osborn Sets New Season Scoring Mark in Wild Women’s Lacrosse Winner

COLUMBUS, Ohio –  The Capital University women's lacrosse team was back in action on Saturday night and they did not skip a beat as they faced the John Carroll Blue Streaks. In hard fought and physical match, the Comets – led by freshman phenom Grace Osborn – prevailed by a score of 18-8. Osborn's six goals in the first half gave her 71 on the season, surpassing Luci Kanowsky's record of 69 for a single campaign.

The victory makes 12 tallies in the win column for the Comets who keep their perfect season going, 12-0. The team also picks up their third conference win and remains at the top of the OAC table.
John Carroll, who was undefeated in conference play heading into the game, now drops to 3-5 on the year and 2-1 in their OAC matchups.

OSBORN ADDS ANOTHER LINE TO HER RESUME
Freshman midfielder Grace Osborn has had one of the best debut seasons in Capital history. Just two games ago she broke the record for most goals scored in a game with 10 against Baldwin Wallace. Now she has another record in the form of total goals scored in a single season.

After scoring four goals in the first 20 minutes of the game – tying her with Kanowsky's record – her fifth, an unassisted gem with 8:39 remaining in the second quarter, put her over the top. She would go on to score once more before picking up her second yellow card and being forced to sit for the second half of the game.

Her now 71 goals on the season gives her an average of 5.9 goals per game over the season, a number that is on pace to top yet another Capital leaderboard.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a game that was expected to be a battle from the very beginning, Capital got out to a strong start, scoring four goals before allowing one to JCU. Osborn was once again at the forefront of the Capital attack, scoring three of those first four as well as assisting on the other scored by Luci Kanowsky,  and leading the Comets to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a little more tightly contested as Capital's five goals in the period were interrupted by three John Carroll goals. Brooke Delara broke into the scoring column to start out the quarter. However, JCU responded with a goal of their own, this time having the woman-up advantage. This was followed by three straight goals for Cap with Osborn netting the first two and assisting on the third by Dylan Smith. Osborn ended the half with her sixth goal of the day, coming in response to a short-lived two-goal run by the Blue Streaks. At the break, the Comets held a five-goal lead, 9-4.

Things started to get chippy in the second half as both teams began to give all they had to best their opponent. The two squads broke even in the third quarter, splitting the period with two goals apiece. Capitals scores came courtesy of Kanowsky and Julia Foresi, leaving the Comets with the same five-goal lead they started the half with, this time 11-6.

In the final fifteen minutes, the Purple and White started to pull ahead permanently. Their seven scores in the period trumped JCU's two and the Comets would streak out to a 18-8 win. The first goal of the fourth quarter came unassisted from Avery Hart, a woman who is no stranger to the back of the net as she led the women's soccer team in scoring this past fall. This goal was quickly followed up by a Blue Streak response. However, the Comets' offense then proceeded to explode with five straight by Brooke Delara, Katie Page, Smith, Delara again, and Kanowksy. The final three goals of that Cap run came with a woman-up advantage. After another lone Blue Streak score, Smith would net another woman-up goal to finish off JCU, 18-8.

THE NUMBERS
Seven Comets scored in this one, with Grace Osborn finding the back of the net six times and leading the way. Dylan Smith, Brooke Delara, and Luci Kanowsky each recorded a hat trick. To round out the scoring column, Katie Page, Julia Foresi, and Avery Hart each netted one.

In terms of points, Osborns six goals and two assists were enough to lock up the team-lead in the category. Otherwise notable were Delara's four, and Kanowsky and Smith who had three apiece. Hart and Skyla Caito each recorded one.

When it came to loose balls, Page and Bee Kuehn picked up the most, rounding up four ground balls each. Molly Searles, Delara, and Osborn all had three roundups, and the combination of Foresi and Caito had two apiece. Maddy Radanof, Hanna Searles, and Avery Hart each collected one.

Capital collectively caused nine of JCU's 21 turnovers, Delara and Kanowsky being the most disruptive, causing two each.

The Comet in the cage, Bee Kuehn, broke into double-digits in the save category for the second time this season. Her 11 saves aided in giving her the positive decision, still with as many wins as the team, 12-0.

THE OPPONENT
Olivia Gerlach led the Blue Streaks in goals (3) and points (7). Jenna Ginsberg also had seven points, as well as six ground balls.

John Carroll's goalies Ava Welchans and Maddie Munding split time in the cage. Welchans, who started the game, gets credited with the loss.
