MARIETTA, Ohio – Playing in a torrential downpour, the Capital University women's lacrosse team didn't let a difficult start to the game stop them from raining goals, enroute to a 25-11 blitzing of Marietta College.
The Comet's (13-0, 4-0 OAC) set all kinds of new marks this evening with freshman sensation
Grace Osborn leading the lines on the offensive end and
Bee Kuehn maintaining a strong presence in the cage defensively.
Settling tonight's numbers, Osborn led the scoring with 13 goals scored,
Brooke Delara did her best to keep up with eight goals, and
Luci Kanowsky scored twice and dished out four assists.
Dylan Smith scored once, and
Julia Foresi scored one and assisted one.
Defensively, Osborn picked up a team-high five ground balls, while four players (Delara, Foresi,
Katie Page, and
Hanna Searles) added three each.
Maddy Radanof, Delara, and Foresi each chipped in with two caused turnovers. Meanwhile, Page recorded 11 draw controls and Osborn added eight of her own.
NEW MARKS SET
As has been the case all season, Cap set numerous new program records this evening. As a team, the Comets tied their most goals in a single game with 25 tonight. The only previous time this had been accomplished was on April 16, 2016 against Wilmington College.
Individually,
Grace Osborn scored 13 goals in the game, beating her own single-game record of 10 set earlier this year. In the process, Osborn brought her season point total to 103, becoming the first player to eclipse the 100-point mark in a single season. Her 13 points this evening tie her for second most in a single game. Additionally,
Brooke Delara registered 10 points this evening, giving her 101 on the year -- achieved later in the fourth quarter. Both Osborn and Delara surpassed the previous record for most points in a season (97 - set by Delara last year), so now it's anybody's best guess who will finish on-top by season's end this year.
Aside from Capital's record books, Osborn will add her name to the NCAA's books. Her 13 goals this evening tied her for the third most in a single game in Division III history. She sits even with 10 other individuals. The NCAA record is 15 goals in a game, set by Ashley Murtha of Mitchell in 2017.
In the Capital goal,
Bee Kuehn earned her 13th win of the season, taking ownership of the most wins in a single season by a Capital goalie. Kuehn previously was tied with Lisa Lotz and Maddie Wilson with 12 in a single campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers came out of the gates early making life difficult on the Comets as they built themselves a 2-0 lead after just two minutes had elapsed. From there Marietta continued to trouble Capital, trading blows with the undefeated Comets. Down 2-0, Cap got goals from
Luci Kanowsky and
Grace Osborn to tie the game at twos, but the hosts would then take leads at 3-2 and 4-3 before Capital would finally settle into the game.
With the score 4-3 Marietta, three straight goals from Cap in the form of
Dylan Smith, Kanowsky, and Osborn would give the Purple and White the separation they would need. By the end of the first quarter, two more goals from Osborn would give Cap an 8-5 lead – one they would continue to build in the second quarter.
Marietta would trim Cap's lead to as few as 10-7, but ultimately five second quarter goals out of the stick of
Brooke Delara would lead to the Comets doubling up on the Pioneers at halftime, 16-8. In addition to Delara's five, Osborn brought her first half tally to seven with a hat-trick in the second quarter as well.
In the third period of play, Capital clicked it into cruise control as Osborn continued to do what she does best. She scored five times in the quarter, while
Julia Foresi netted once as well. In the fourth quarter, Capital finished it out as Delara scored two more times and Osborn put an exclamation point on the evening with her 13th of the game.
THE OPPONENT
Hope Adams led the Pioneers with three goals scored. Maddie Leers and Abby Ray combined to make eight saves in the cage.
