UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University men's lacrosse team ventured to the Cleveland area to take on John Carroll University, where they were dropped by a final score of 21-6.
Capital now sits at 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in OAC play after the game. John Carroll improved to 9-1 and 3-0 in conference. The Blue Streaks have spent time all season in and around the national rankings.
The Comets got out of the gates first as
Drew Bolen forced a JCU turnover, scooped the ground ball and ran the length of the field to deposit his second goal of the year just one minute and six seconds into the game.
Unfortunately for Capital, the early momentum built from Bolen's goal would fizzle out as JCU would score the next 20 goals in the game, carrying a 20-1 lead with 7:53 left in the third quarter.
Not ready to throw in the towel, Capital responded with a man-up goal from
Brenden Pelton with 39 seconds left in the third quarter that would kickstart a positive fourth quarter for Capital.
In the fourth, the Comets netted four times to JCU's one, ultimately finishing the game on a bit of a high note considering the scoreline. Peloton grabbed his second of the game before
Jacob Poole deposited another goal to his seven on the year just a minute later.
Nathan Montgomery then finished out the Capital scoring with two quickfire goals, including one that was assisted by
Jake Belt.
Capital was hard-pressed on the defensive side of the game as the team scooped up just 20 ground balls while committing 25 turnovers as a team.
Chase Snyder paced the team with four pick-ups.
Sam McInturf made the start in the cage for Capital, making 14 saves on the day.
John Carroll got four-goal performances from Morgan Morrell, Matt Berdysiak, and Brendan Whitty to lead their offense. Cam Cecere picked up a game-high eight ground balls.
Capital will return home on Wednesday evening with a contest against Marietta. The faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and Capital will surely be looking for a confidence boosting win as they head into the home stretch of OAC play.
