COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing on a special Friday night at a world-class facility in the form of Tennis Ohio, the Capital University men's tennis team took on John Carroll University and unfortunately were on the wrong side of a 9-0 score.
Despite the score, Capital had plenty to be proud of and cherish from the evening. As a team, Capital hosted an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Match in which the players wore teal accents and helped to raise funds for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to support those fighting ovarian cancer. The cause resonates close to home for head coach
Cody Hurley as his mother, Debra, passed away from the disease seven years ago to the day (April 1, 2015).
Fans in attendance could make donations to support the fight, and those who were unable to make it and still wish to support the cause can do so by
JOINING THE FIGHT. The fundraiser will be open through Sunday, April 3rd. To this point, Capital men's tennis has raised approximately $2,300 of their $5,000 goal.
ABOUT THE MATCH
Capital's young lineup of five freshmen and one sophomore got roughed up by the more experienced JCU lineup that featured four of their seven players that were of junior level or higher – including a graduate student and a fifth year player. Despite the youth, Capital played tough making life difficult for the Blue Streaks throughout the match.
The lone doubles game to go in favor of Capital was won by
Leonardo Abreu and
Alex Stout. Despite the one game, Abreu and Stout were upended 8-1. The pairings of
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch and
Jesse Stevens and
Aaron Askew both lost 8-0.
In singles action, Capital (6-8, 1-1 OAC) picked up a few more games, but ultimately, dropped each match in consecutive sets. Abreu took one game at first singles, Welch claimed three games at fourth singles, and Askew took two games at sixth singles.
