HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Capital University men's tennis team was overcome on Tuesday afternoon by Albion College by a final score of 8-1.
The Comets – now 3-5 on the season – dropped all three doubles matches to set back the day, before falling in five out of six singles bouts.
"We were just not able to produce our best tennis today," said head coach
Cody Hurley. "We came out of the gates flat and were unable to find our form as the match progressed."
In doubles action, the usual pairings of
Leonardo Abreu and
Alex Stout,
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch, and
Aaron Askew and
Jesse Stevens were in the line up, but were all overcome by a margin of four or more games. Abreu and Stout lost 8-4, Surles and Welch fell 8-2, and Askew and Stevens lost 8-3.
The singles action got a bit better, but still only yielded one team point courtesy of
Alex Stout at second singles. Stout defeated Albion's Daniel McGarry in a tiebreaker match. Stout split the first two sets, winning 6-3 and losing 4-6. In a single game tiebreaker, Stout won 10-2, claiming the win. At first singles, reigning OAC Player of the Week
Leonardo Abreu battled an experienced opponent and fell in the first set 7-5 after leading 5-2. Abreu then lost the second set 6-3.
Colin Welch,
Aaron Askew,
Jesse Stevens, and
Jack Schwarz lost in consecutive sets in their respective matches.
"
Alex Stout played the best tennis I've seen from him in the past couple of weeks – he's had a great week this week," said coach Hurley. "While we're frustrated with another loss, tomorrow is a new day and we will make sure we get ready to go against a tough opponent in Roanoke."
