LEESBURG, Fla. – After falling in their first game by a final score of 9-1, the Capital University softball team learned their second game for the day would be scratched due to an umpire shortage at the fields. Unfortunately, all teams competing at Sleepy Hollow today got their second games of the day canceled due to the issue.
In game one, the Comets (0-1) were upended by Penn State Altoona (1-2) after five innings. The setback occurred early as Altoona jumped out a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Capital starter
Brianna Shearer struggled to settle in during her debut this season, as she dealt with some control issues in the first and second innings. Rounding out the pitching effort today, freshman
Kelcie Schnitzler came in for the last two innings, and pitched decently well. She did allow two unearned runs, four hits, and two walks, but, all-in-all it was a solid collegiate debut.
At the dish, Capital recorded four hits in the game.
Tiffany Zuelzke,
Lexie Leggett,
Krislyn Bayles, and
Liz Stonerock finished with one hit each. Bayles's hit in the top of the third came on a well-hit line drive double to right center, but Cap could not get her home.
The lone Comet run came in the top of the second inning.
Kayedon Martin led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the Altoona third baseman. Three batters later,
Maddie McKinniss drew a walk, putting runners on the corners (Martin advanced around after the error and a groundout). McKinniss then stole second and the Altoona catcher threw the ball away, allowing Martin to trot home from third.
For Altoona, Jayde Burge finished with four RBIs on two hits. Casey Reese tossed all five innings, earning the win.

Capital will be back in action tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Hancock Park. The team will be expecting to get both games in, assuming the Spring Games can field a crew of umpires for both games. Due to the umpire situation, the Spring Games administrators slightly altered the game times and field numbers, but Capital will still play Eastern Nazarene and Ursinus tomorrow at Hancock Park, field one.
