STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University men's tennis team slipped to a 3-4 record during the academic year as they fell by a 5-4 scoreline at Franciscan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets were led off by a strong performance at doubles as they took two out of a possible three team points in the discipline. In singles, several players played strong matches, but in the end, Franciscan made up enough ground to flip the score in their favor at the end.
"Obviously, we are disappointed with the result today, but I am very proud of the resilience and fight our guys showed," said head coach
Cody Hurley. "We had a tremendous start in doubles, but we just weren't able to make the comeback today."
In doubles play, the pairings of
Leonardo Abreu and
Alex Stout, and
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch pulled off impressive wins. Abreu and Stout won their match 8-4, while Surles and Welch triumphed at a 8-6 score.
Jack Schwarz and
Aaron Askew were knocked off at third doubles by a score of 4-8.
In singles action, Abreu and Welch won their matches in marathon style. First, Abreu won his sets in a fashion of 7-5 and 7-6, while his second set came on a tiebreaker score of 7-3. Welch also took his sets deep in the count, but he didn't as much overtime to decide things as he won 7-5 and 6-3.
Spencer Surles also came up close in his match. He went a lengthy three sets to battle hard, but in the end was defeated. He won the first set 6-4, but an overtime loss in the second set led to him falling in the third. His scores came in as 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), and 2-6.
Alex Stout,
Aaron Askew, and
Jack Schwarz all dropped their singles matches in consecutive sets.
"Leonardo and Colin both played marathon matches today, and Spencer gave everything he had, but credit to Franciscan for defending their home court well" said Hurley. "We are on the right track and I look forward to seeing what we can do in Hilton Head this coming week."
