COLUMBUS, Ohio – It truly was a historic night under the lights of Bernlohr Stadium on Wednesday evening as the Capital University women's lacrosse team faced off against the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University. Capital recorded the third shutout in program history, taking down the Muskies by a score of 24-0. The last time the Comets accomplished such a feat dates back to 2019 when they went back-to-back with shutouts against Muskingum and Marietta.
Cap keeps marching on as they now move to 11-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Muskingum drops to 2-5 (0-2 OAC).
Capital goalie
Bee Kuehn recorded her first complete game shutout, making two saves on the day. She took part in the first ever Cap clean sheet on March 30, 2019 also against Muskingum, in which she played 30 minutes. After today's game she now sits with 204 saves in total for her career. The positive decision today continues to match her record with the team's, at 11-0.
INTO RECORD BOOKS AGAIN FOR BROOKE DELARA
Capital graduate midfielder
Brooke Delara has now solidified her place in Capital women's lacrosse history as the top career points getter. With her eight points against Muskingum, she now boasts 309 points in her illustrious career, passing the 302 point mark set by
Kathryn Walton in 2021.
The big moment came only one minute into the game as Delara found the back of the net for her first goal – and second point – of the game, career point number 303. Her previous point came in the form of an assist to
Luci Kanowsky just 23 seconds earlier to tie the record.
Delara now holds the top spot in both career assists and career points. Added to that, she sits at fourth all-time in career goals, just below her teammate Kanowsky. With the resume she has built here as a Comet, Delara will go down as one of the most dominant players in Capital history as well as the OAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Capital offense was firing on all cylinders in this one, slipping through the Muskie defense and finding the net with ease. Not even a minute and a half into the game, Capital found themselves with a four-goal lead courtesy of two goals by
Grace Osborn, one by Kanowsky, and the record breaking goal by Delara.
It was smooth sailing from then on out as Capital kept the steady scoring going throughout the game. The Comets netted 11 in the first, four in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth, to end up at 24, just one shy of the team record for goals in a game. They scored two shorthanded goals in the game, one by
Katie Page and the other by
Audrey Kilgallon off of yet another Delara assist. Cap's lone power-play goal came from the stick of
Molly Searles early in the fourth quarter. All other goals came in times of even strength.
All 17 active players saw the field for Capital, 10 of whom found the back of the cage. The Comets were sure to share the wealth resulting in a numerous number of goal scorers. Kanowsky lead the scoring column with six goals on the day, She was followed by Osborn (4), Delara (3), Page (2),
Dylan Smith (2),
Abigail Midnight (1),
Avery Hart (1),
Molly Searles (1),
Maddy Radanof (1),
Hanna Searles (1),
Julia Foresi (1), and Kilgallon (1).
Kanowsky's six goals also helped her to cross the 150 goal mark, now with 155 and solidly in third place all-time. Along with six goals, she also had four assists, leading the team in the game with 10 points.
Otherwise in points category were Delara (8), Osborn (7), Foresi (3), Page (2), Smith (2), Midnight (1), Hart (1), Radanof (1), Kilgallon (1), and the Searles sisters with one each.
Assists were the name of the game for the Comets as they looked to move the ball around on offense to get the best look possible, totaling 14 throughout the four quarters. None other than
Brooke Delara took charge of the unselfishness, dishing out five assists. Following in her footsteps were Kanowsky (4), Osborn (3), and Foresi (2).
To round out the individual side of the statistics,
Molly Searles picked up the most ground balls, collecting four in total, followed by Osborn (3), Midnight (2), Page (2), Delara (2), Kanowsky (2),
Kori Barrett (2),
Skyla Caito (2), and a host of others. Osborn controlled by far the most draws with nine on the day, challenged only by Delara with four.
The Purple and White were also a menace on defense, forcing 21 turnovers by the Muskies, nine of which were directly caused by Capital players.
Finally, the team effort put on by the Comets should not go unnoticed. Collectively, Cap went 13-for-15 when clearing the ball and 24-of-27 on draw controls, providing plenty of opportunities for the offense to go to work.
