COLUMBUS, Ohio – It didn't come easily, but the Capital University women's tennis team routed the University of Mount Union by a final score of 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (3-1, 1-0 OAC)defeated the Purple Raiders by a healthy margin but saw three matches go into overtime to decide them, making the results a lot closer than they appeared.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort and fight today," said head coach
Lynn Winters. "Kelli and Nicole won a really tough doubles battle and we had some really great singles matches as well!"
Compiling the scoring for Capital in doubles were the duos of
Kelli Wright-Lovell and
Nicole Flock (9-7 winners),
Anna Fletcher and
Josie Nichols (8-4 winners), and
Abigail Hornacek and
Amy Wright-Lovell (8-2 winners).
In singles competition,
Anna Fletcher,
Nicole Flock,
Kylee Fliter,
Josie Nichols, and
Karen Kanke all won their battles, while
Kelli Wright-Lovell was on the wrong end of a tiebreaking third set match-up at first singles.
Fletcher won her second singles match via back-to-back tiebreaker set wins, taking both sets 7-6. Flock – fresh off her winter season with the women's basketball program – won her third singles match 6-0, 6-2. Fliter cruised past her opponent with identical sets of 6-0. Nichols won fifth singles 6-0, 6-1. Kanke rounded out the action, winning consecutive sets 6-4, 6-2.
Wright-Lovell's match at first singles was a marathon that finished 7-5, 6-7, and then 10-8 in the final set tiebreaker.

Capital hosts Shawnee State at Scarborough Tennis Club next Friday, April 1st in a mid-season non-conference match at 1 p.m. The team will then return to OAC competition the next day as they travel to Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 2nd.
