BATAVIA, Ohio – On Sunday afternoon, the Capital University baseball team trekked down to Batavia High School just outside of Cincinnati, where they played a two-game set with Rose Hulman. There, the Comets were dropped in consecutive games, falling to 5-10 on the year.
In game one, the Engineers emerged victorious 16-5 before taking game two by a final of 13-2.
Logan White put together another solid afternoon at the play, going a combined 4-of-8 at the plate.
In game one,
Ethan Neal had a great game hitting, going 2-for-3 and collecting four RBIs.
GAME ONE
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the third, Cap responded with a big bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Ben Stevens started things by reaching on a single up the middle, before moving around on a walk from
Brandon Barnette and a hit-by-pitch by
Connor Feeney. With the bases loaded,
Ethan Neal stepped to the plate and cranked a lined drive off the center field fence that cleared the bases.
The Comets added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but in the end, they would prove to be mere consolation. First, Barnette led off with an infield single before Feeney was once again tagged by a pitch. With Barnette now in scoring position, Neal again delivered with an RBI single to right field. Two batters later, Feeney was on third and scored on a wild pitch.
Capital three four pitchers in the contest, with
Curtis Clark getting saddled with the loss. He threw three and a third inning, allowing six hits and walking three.
Kyle Bowles,
Justin Mason, and
Matt Miller combined for the remaining three and two-thirds innings of work. Clark and Miller recorded five strikeouts between them.
GAME TWO
In the second game, Capital fell behind in the first inning on the heels of five unearned runs.
The top of the second yielded the team's first run of the game as
Hunter Wilson reached on a wild pitch after striking out. The play allowed
CJ Rockwell to score from third. Rockwell had previously reached on a flared single to right field.
The Comets would continue to trail through to the seventh inning where they would tack on one more consolation run.
Josh Sagredo led off with a single to left and advanced on a fielding error by the Rose Hulman third baseman. On second, Sagredo scored as
Logan White pumped a double to the fence in left center. Unfortunately the momentum fizzled out and RHIT closed the book on Capital after just seven innings.
Game two saw six Capital pitchers work on the mound.
Gavin Vanhorn started the game and was hit with the loss, throwing 2.1 innings and conceding eight hits and three walks.
Tyler Sickles,
Bryant Caporale,
Colin Boldin,
Garrett Montgomery, and
Brennon Newell combined for the relief innings.
