CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team wrapped up play at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida this afternoon with a pair of losses to Minnesota Morris and Wisconsin Lutheran.
Both games saw the Comets (1-7) surrender double-digit runs. Despite the defensive struggles, Capital did pretty well at the plate, collecting 14 hits in the two games. Unfortunately for Capital, the quality hits came sporadically, not boding well for a positive run return.
Kayedon Martin led the team with four hits today – two in each game – and three RBIs.
Tiffany Zuelzke and
Krislyn Bayles also put together multi-hit games this afternoon as well.
GAME ONE: Minnesota Morris wins 12-3
The Comets were rattled early in the top of the first inning and simply could not recover. The team conceded nine runs in the opening frame, before getting three runs back of their own.
In the bottom of the first,
Lexie Leggett reached on a fielding error from the Cougars' shortstop and then came around and scored on
Kayedon Martin's RBI double.
Two innings later Martin was at it again as her single to left field scored
Krislyn Bayles. Martin then scored herself as
Liz Stonerock doubled to the right center wall. The damage would suffice there as Minnesota Morris would add on three more runs before the end of the game, closing it out with a 12-3 win.
Krislyn Bayles started in the circle for game one, lasting the distance and certainly putting the effort in. She threw 146 pitches in the seven-inning game and 10 hits, 12 runs (eight earned) and she struckout six. The loss was the second of her campaign.
GAME TWO: Wisconsin Lutheran wins 10-2 (5 innings)
Another slow start for the Comets spelled disaster for the tempo of game two as Capital found themselves trailing 7-0 after two innings.
Cap would get a single run in the top of the third and top of the fifth, but a 10th run in the bottom half of the fifth would finish off the run-rule decision.
In the third,
Maddie McKinniss led off with a single and advanced on
Kayedon Martin's single.
Liz Stonerock then delivered another RBI double, this time to the left center wall, which scored McKinniss.
In the fifth,
Tiffany Zuelzke got things going by reaching on an infield hit. She then advanced on a ground out from McKinniss and scored on Martin's RBI single to center.
Kelcie Schnitzler started the game in the circle, and she threw the first two innings, conceding seven hits and seven runs (four earned).
Brianna Shearer finished the game, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and striking out three. The decision went to Schnitzler, who now holds a 1-2 record on the year.
