Baseball Concludes Texas Trip On Wrong End of Scoreboard

DALLAS, Texas – The Capital University baseball team concluded play on their spring break travels to the Lone Star state yesterday with a pair of losses to Blackburn College and Dakota State University.

While in Texas, Capital slung together a record of 2-7, and they now sit 4-8 overall on the young season.

Through two games yesterday, Logan White led the team, hitting safely in both games, while also reaching twice via the walk. Others collecting multiple hits included Ryne McKinney, and Connor Feeney, Tyler Knapp. Between the two games, Cap collected just 14 hits.

GAME ONE: Blackburn wins 5-4
Playing an early morning game, Capital got behind 2-0 through to the fifth inning where they would finally awaken the bats.

Cole Callaghan and Logan White put two on via back-to-back singles and the duo came around to score on Ben Stevens' two-RBI double. Shortly after, Stevens trotted home on Ryne McKinney's RBI single.

Playing from in front, Capital surrendered their lead in the bottom of the sixth, conceding two runs. They responded well however by getting an unearned run in the top of the seventh to tie it up. Brandon Barnette reached on an error, a play that allowed Logan White to score.

Unfortunately, Capital would fail to hang on as Blackburn would take the win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Curtis Clark started on the bump in game one, lasting five strong innings. He surrendered three runs (one earned) and conceded just one walk. Impressively, Clark fanned five Beaver hitters. Brennon Newell came on in relief and threw an inning and two-thirds where he allowed two runs on three hits, getting credited with the loss. He's now 1-1 on the season.

GAME TWO: Dakota State wins 23-7
Both teams came out of the dugout slinging at the plate as the game saw Capital leading 5-2 after the first inning alone. Unfortunately from there though, the DSU bullpen kept the Comets quiet at the plate.

A trio of RBI doubles in the bottom of the first helped the Comets score their first five runs. First, Logan White knocked home Abram Sykora, then Connor Feeney's double scored White and EJ Santana. Feeney and Ryne McKinney would then come around to score on Tyler Knapp's double to right field.

Knapp and Sykora would then knock in two more runs in the bottom of the third, giving Cap a 7-3 lead. Knapp's RBI single scored McKinney and Sykora's sac fly scored Feeney.
From there, Dakota State got the better of the Capital bullpen and scored 20 runs through the final four innings to claim the win.

Gavin Vanhorn started game two, lasting 3.1 innings before making way for Colin Boldin. Boldin (0-1) would ultimately get hit with the loss allowing five runs on four hits. A mixture of Bryant Caporale, Josh Sagredo, Aaron Olech, and Spencer Knight combined to finish off the game.  As a staff, Cap struck out four DSU hitters.
