Men’s Tennis Can’t Out-Battle the Battling Bishops

DELAWARE, Ohio – On Tuesday evening, the Capital University men's tennis team made the trek across town to Ohio Wesleyan University to take part in their second competition day of the spring season. There, the Comets were setback early and couldn't recover, eventually falling by a final margin of 7-2.

The loss slides the team to a 3-3 record overall this year.

"We suffered some slow starts in doubles, which put us in a deficit we couldn't come back from," said coach Cody Hurley. "Leonardo showed a lot of heart at first singles with an impressive effort winning from a set down, and Spencer played exceptionally well today, picking up a dominant win at fourth singles."

Despite some hard-fought play, doubles action started the Comets in a hole as OWU took all three points in that segment of scoring. The first doubles pairing of Leonardo Abreu and Alex Stout fell 8-1 to Jose Mancilla and Alex Reiss. At second doubles, Spencer Surles and Colin Welch battled hard, but in the end fell 8-4 to Ohio Wesleyan's Marcelo Aguilar and Elliot Spicer. The third doubles match-up once again saw the Bishops get the better of Capital, this time by a margin of 8-3. Aaron Askew and Jesse Stevens were upended by Grant Brooks and Tucker Strawser.

Playing in a hole, the Comets looked to get things going in singles competition. After dropping his first set 6-1, Abreu rallied back and cruised through sets two and three by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to defeat Mancilla at first singles. The other team point came at fourth singles as Spencer Surles dominated OWU's Strawser by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Stout (2-6, 2-6), Welch (1-6, 0-6), Askew (3-6, 1-6), and Stevens (2-6, 1-6) dropped their singles matches in consecutive sets.

"Despite the result, I am proud of the progress we've made this week," continued Hurley. "We are so young, and I know we will continue to grow and get better every match we play."
