ADA, Ohio -- In what looked to be a fairly close affair after the first quarter, the Capital University women's basketball team struggled to keep pace with hosts Ohio Northern University, eventually falling by a final score of 71-46 on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets were led in scoring by
Laney Murphy with nine points and a pair of eight-point efforts from
Brooke Ommert and
Maddie Dougoud.
Ommert rounded out a decent game with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital found themselves in a rut early on, down 7-2, but a 3-pointer from Ommert got Cap within two midway through the frame. Eventually, ONU scored the final points of the first quarter with 3:36 left, leading to a 15-9 score after one.
In the second quarter, Capital stayed close early on, as they brought the score to 17-11 on a
Maddie Dougoud jumper with 5:59 left in the frame. From their, ONU put their foot down and closed the quarter on a 11-5 run, to take a 12-point halftime lead.
Out of the halftime intermission, Capital was able to put together back-to-back quarters of 15 points each, but could not keep up defensively as Ohio Northern combined for 43 second-half points to claim the eventual 71-46 win.
Late on, Capital got strong contributions off the bench from
Katie Burke (two points, two assists),
Curstin Giffin (three points), and
Gabby Ledbetter (two points).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
As a whole, Capital shot the ball decently putting the ball up at a 36% clip, including a 50% mark from beyond the arc. The difference proved to be on the other end as ONU put the ball up at a 42% clip.
Capital played some strong defense with two blocks and five steals in the game.
Brooke Ommert and
Maddi Weiland accounted for the blocks, while
Demi Brewer (2), Ommert, Weiland, and Dougoud all combined for the steals.
Curstin Giffin's points all game on one shot, marking her first career 3-pointer wearing the Purple and White.
THE OPPONENT
Lexi Jacobs led all scorers with 14 points. Kasey Knippen (11 points) and Alissa Stahler (10 points) also hit double figures for ONU.
UP NEXT
Capital will travel to Heidelberg this Wednesday, February 9th for a 7 p.m. tip with the Student Princes. The Comets will be looking to make-up for an overtime loss to Heidelberg earlier this season.
