COLUMBUS, Ohio – Picking up right where they left off on Saturday, the Capital University women's lacrosse team cruised their way to a 21-9 win over visiting Centre College on Wednesday night.
Freshman
Grace Osborn continued to impress early on in her career as she scored six more goals, bringing her season total – and career total – to 12 after just two games. Further impressive, Osborn added two assists, four ground balls and an astounding 10 draw controls.
Grad student
Brooke Delara and senior
Luci Kanowsky combined for 10 goals and three assists as well. Kanowsky contributed a game-high eight ground balls as well.
In addition to the three firepower attackers in Osborn, Delara, and Kanowsky, five Comets scored one goal each.
Abigail Midnight,
Skyla Caito and
Avery Hart each found the cage once, while transfers
Katie Page and
Julia Foresi scored their first goals at Capital.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets uncharacteristically found themselves behind early, twice, at 1-0 and again at 3-2. The Colonels scored three goals while sandwiching a pair of Kanowsky goals. Despite trailing 3-2, Capital netted four straight to establish control in the game and carried a 6-3 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Centre (1-2) came out looking to get back involved by scoring first off Lily Gahm's third goal of the game. However, Capital would blitz the scoresheet during the remainder of the period, finishing the first half on a 8-1 run, leading to a 14-5 halftime advantage. Highlights of the run were
Abigail Midnight's second goal of the season and first Capital goals from
Katie Page and
Julia Foresi.
Again in the third, the Comets removed all doubt from the result by adding five more goals to their total. All five goals were scored by the offensive combo of Osborn, Kanowsky and Delara.
In the fourth, Capital let off the gas and only matched Centre 2-2 in the frame.
Avery Hart scored her first goal of the season in the frame.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
As a team, Capital struggled early controlling the draw, but then settled in with
Dylan Smith taking the draw. This led to the Comets winning the battle 21-12 at the end of the game, led largely by Osborn's 10 controls.
Capital was also extremely busy causing turnovers and picking up ground balls, winning both battles by margins of 20-12 and 33-19. Osborn was again busy in the caused turnover category, leading the team with five. The Searles twins were also impactful in forcing Centre to give the ball up as
Molly Searles and
Hanna Searles each had three forced turnovers. On the ground ball side, Kanowsky led all players with eight pick-ups, while
Hanna Searles added five, Osborn added four, and
Molly Searles and
Bee Kuehn finished with three each.
THE OPPONENT
Lily Gahm led the Colonels in scoring with 4 goals. Gahm also controlled the most ground balls on the team with four. Finally, she tied for top assist woman with one, sharing this title with Madeleine Longemeyer.
In the cage for the Colonels was Lola Duff. She made 15 saves for a save percentage of 41.7 percent. Her record now drops to 1-2 on the season.
UP NEXT
Capital will hit the road for the first time this season with an away contest at Washington & Jefferson this Saturday, February 26th. Start time for that game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
