TIFFIN, Ohio – Despite leading by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Capital University men's basketball team was upended by a final score of 77-65 at Heidelberg University in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
With the loss, Capital concludes their season with an overall record of 14-11. This was the fourth consecutive season with a .500 or better overall record. During conference play, Cap had a record of 9-8. After winning tonight's game, the No. 3 seeded Student Princes will travel to No. 2 Mount Union on Thursday evening.
Tonight's leading scorers for Capital were
Dom Moegerle (14 points),
Alex Eyink (13 points), and
Ryan Suever (10 points). The Purple and White were also busy on the glass as they pulled down 42 boards.
Tyler Schreck led the team with 10 rebounds, while Moegerle finished with nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Heidelberg scored the first basket of the game, Capital went on a 10-2 run, establishing themselves in the game early.
David Sanford and
Ryan Suever both knocked down 3-pointers in the sequence for Capital.
As the Student Princes began to claw back, they got as close as 16-10 at the midpoint of the first half. Capital responded in force, behind the hot hand of
Dom Moegerle. The freshman scored eight straight points for the Purple and White courtesy of a layup and back-to-back triples. Dom's efforts helped lead Capital toward their largest lead of the game.
After a couple of buckets by Heidelberg, Capital went ahead 29-19 on
Alex Eyink's 3-pointer with 4:42 left in the half. Unfortunately for Capital, the hosts finished the half on a 12-4 run, closing the halftime score to just 33-31.
After the halftime intermission, Heidelberg came out the aggressor and quickly assumed the lead. After a scrappy 10 minutes of play,
Ryan Roth nailed a 3-pointer – a shot that put Capital back in front 48-47.
Once again, though, Capital were overcome by the hosts as Heidelberg re-took the lead and within the next seven minutes of action built a 10-point lead of their own.
With 1:29 left in the game,
Alex Eyink knocked down a pair of free throws, bringing Cap to just 68-65, but from there, the Student Princes would finish on a 9-0 run, claiming the 77-65 win.

Seniors
Tyler Schreck and
Keandre Graves concluded their Capital careers in the loss today. Graves, who transferred to Capital before last season finished with 159 points, 58 rebounds, and 25 assists. Schreck concluded his four-year career with 562 points, 457 rebounds, 190 assists, 108 steals, and 59 blocks.
Sophomore
David Sanford had a breakout season this year finishing the campaign with 310 total points. He complimented that with 57 rebounds, 49 assists, and 22 steals.
Freshmen trio,
Alex Eyink,
Ryan Suever, and
Dom Moegerle had a solid rookie season with Capital. Eyink finished with 210 points, 52 rebounds, 41 assists, and 21 steals. Suever ended the season with 176 points, 100 rebounds, 18 assists, 16 blocks, and eight steals. Moegerle finished with 126 points, 58 rebounds, 20 assists, 15 steals, and seven blocks.
Griffin Doseck made his case for sixth man of the year, finishing with 148 points, 112 rebounds, 36 assists, 12 steals and six blocks.
