Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse Wins Big in Home Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind what may have been one of the best career debuts in Capital University women's lacrosse history from freshman Grace Osborn, the Comets opened up the 2022 season with a comfortable 18-3 win on Saturday afternoon over Albion College.

Osborn – who was playing in just her first career game – scored six goals, recorded three ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Behind Osborn's efforts, 2021 leading scorer Luci Kanowsky picked right up where she left off by scoring five goals. She paired her scoring efforts with two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Returning for her graduate year, Brooke Delara also had a routine performance as she recorded a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists. She added three ground balls and three caused turnovers as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just 45 seconds after the opening draw, Skyla Caito picked up what seemed to be a never-ending skirmish for the draw control. After gaining control she slipped a shot under the Albion goalie for the quick 1-0 lead. Shortly after, the Britons' Chrystelle Lopez scored a free-position goal to knot the score at one.

After Lopez's goal, Capital (1-0) went on a seven goal run to end the first quarter, highlighted by two goals each from Osborn and Delara, as well as a hat-trick from Kanowsky.

Lopez opened the second quarter with another free-position goal for Albion (0-1), but the Comets once again responded with a hefty run of goals to remove all doubt from the end result. This time, Capital scored six straight goals, as Osborn, Delara, and Kanoswky recorded the bulk of the scoring efforts. Abigail Midnight did net a man-up goal in the flurry as well.

Kelli Flynn then scored a goal for Albion, but it would only be a mere consolation. Capital followed up her goal with four more of their own to cap off the scoring and cruise to the final horn. Dylan Smith, Kanowsky, and Osborn would combine for the final four goals in the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Brooke Delara began her quest to climb up the career record books at Capital with a strong performance. With four assists today, she now sits just 17 assists off the school record in career helpers. With her eight total points, she is just 21 points back from second all-time in school history, and 75 back from the top school record.

Luci Kanowsky's five goals today marked the ninth time in her career she had scored five or more goals in a single game.

Grace Osborn inherited the number four jersey from Kathryn Walton and did the number proud in her first game. Walton is the school's career points record holder, and Osborn certainly started her career showing capable signs she can rival that record over the next four years with six points today.

THE OPPONENT
Chrystelle Lopez led the Britons with two goals and an assist. In the cage, Alexis Robinson stopped 18 shots.

UP NEXT
Capital's next game will take place at home on Wednesday, February 23rd at 5 p.m. against Centre College. This game was originally scheduled for Sunday, February 20th, but was moved back to accommodate a weekend reschedule for Centre.
