BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team traveled north on Saturday to round out their regular season, facing a tough team in the No. 10 ranked Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. In the end the Jackets got the best of the Comets with a final score of 75-46.
Despite the loss, Capital had something to celebrate in the game. With her third 3-pointer of the game, freshman
Laney Murphy broke a school record for most 3-pointers made in a single season. By the end of the game, she finished with 67 on the season, eclipsing the previous school record of 65, set by Amy Strine in the 1996-97 season.
Murphy led all players with 18 points this afternoon, finishing 6-for-12 from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital's shooting efforts in the first half were not the best as the team made only three of their field goals in the first quarter, leading to a 22-9 deficit at the first break. Things improved in the second quarter as the Comets got some solid offense going and were able to match BW in points for the period, keeping the difference at 13 heading into the locker rooms.
In the third quarter, Capital came out looking for a way back in the game. Unfortunately, on the same token, BW came out looking to put the game to bed, making the road back for Capital that much harder. The big moment of the third quarter was Murphy's record-breaking 3-pointer as she dispatched her 66th of the season with 6:46 remaining in the stanza.
Maddie Dougoud picked up the assist on the basket.
In the fourth, Baldwin Wallace showed why they've been nationally ranked all season by putting another 25 points on the scoreboard in the final 10 minutes of play, nearly doubling up the Comets' scoring totals in the frame.
THE NUMBERS
Laney Murphy turned in a high-octane performance once again, putting up double-digits for the 18th time this season, including eight games of 15 or more. To round out her day she also had one assist and one rebound.
Maddie Dougoud put in a solid effort with nine points and a rebound, an assist, and a block.
Demi Brewer dropped seven points during her time on the floor, with two rebounds and one steal.
Gabby Ledbetter took advantage of her minutes with seven points and two rebounds.
THE OPPONENT
Lily Edwards led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points and Megan Hensel followed 13 points. Edwards also had six rebounds.
