Women’s Basketball Concludes Their Season at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team closed the book on a difficult 2021-2022 campaign on Monday night with a 61-50 loss on the road to Wilmington College.

Capital concluded the season 5-20 overall and 2-14 in the OAC Conference. The game marked the first round of the OAC Tournament with the winner advancing to face the No. 1 overall seed John Carroll tomorrow night.

In tonight's game, Brooke Ommert was the leading scorer with 15 points on 4-of-7 from the field. Additionally, Laney Murphy finished with 13 points in the game.

Maddi Weiland led the Comets in rebounds with six. Maddie Dougoud and Demi Brewer were just behind with five each. Dougoud also had team-highs in assists (4), blocks (3) and steals (2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital struggled early on as the Quakers went ahead 12-4 with 5:42 left in the first quarter on a layup from Cassidy Lovett. Despite the setback, the Comets stepped up their defense and embarked on a 16-0 run over the next 11+ minutes of play, securing a 20-12 lead at the 4:26 mark of the second quarter.

The run of play was kickstarted by a layup from Nicole Flock and was pushed forward by six defensive steals and one block. Brooke Ommert also helped matters by scoring seven of her 10 first-half points during the Capital onslaught.

Unfortunately for Capital, the hot momentum would slow as Wilmington began to chip their way back into the game. Both teams would finish the first half scoring eight points each, leading to a Capital lead of 28-22 at the intermission.

Unfortunately at the half, the Quakers regrouped and overwhelmed Capital in the third quarter. In the third period, the Comets were on the wrong end of a 16-5 run across the final 4:44, leading to a huge momentum swing in the game. Brooke Ommert hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 34-34 and then shortly after hit a 3-pointer keeping Cap within one point. There, the only other score Cap would manage would be a layup from Demi Brewer

The fourth quarter would continue on a similar trend for the Comets as Wilmington would force the visitors to continue to struggle from the floor. With time running out, Capital would get a pair of 3-pointers from Laney Murphy, but the baskets would only trim the deficit to just 61-50 at the final buzzer.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Laney Murphy would finish her freshman season with 70  three pointers on the season. In their last game at BW, Murphy broke the program record of 65 set in the 1996-97 season by Amy Strine. In addition to the 3-pointers made record, Murphy also set the new mark for most threes attempted in a season with 184. The previous record (159) was set by Kati Todd in the 2004-2005 season. Murphy finished the season with 319 points – the most points in a single season by a Comet since Erin Risner scored 328 during the 2018-19 season.

Brooke Ommert wrapped up her Capital career, finishing the season with 216 points, 137 rebounds, 43 assists, 38 steals and 10 blocks. She also finished with a team-best 46.5% field goal percentage throughout the entire season. In her career, she managed 464 points, 292 rebounds, 83 assists, 68 steals, and 19 blocks.

Fellow senior, Emma Burns also closes the book on her Capital career with tonight's loss. Despite a season-ending injury in the third game of the year, Burns goes out as one of the best to wear the Purple and White in recent years. She ends her career with 684 points, 174 rebounds, 71 assists, 52 steals, and nine blocks.
