CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Playing a pair of matches on the road to open their spring campaign, the Capital University men's tennis team split their results today with a win and a loss, both in the form of 9-0 scores.
The Comets (3-2) started the season with a 9-0 blitzing of Manchester, before being upended by the same score in the second match against hosts, Wabash.
"I was really please with today's performance from our entire line-up," said coach
Cody Hurley. "We put together a dominant performance against Manchester and competed our hearts out against a really tough Wabash team. The level of tennis was much higher than what the final score showed."
MATCH ONE: 9-0 win vs. Manchester
Capital cruised to victory in their first match back in action after a four month pause throughout the winter months, taking a 9-0 win over Manchester College. In doubles action, the top two pairings for Capital won their bouts with Manchester, while the third double pairing won by default.
At first doubles,
Leonardo Abreu and
Alex Stout defeated the duo of Austin Arnold and Andrew Kibler by an 8-5 scoreline. At second doubles,
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch knocked off Blake Rentschler and Trevor Johnson by an 8-2 margin.
In singles action, the Comets continued to control the action. At first singles, Abreu defeated his opponent in matching 6-1 sets. Second singles fell in favor of
Alex Stout by scores of 7-5 and 6-2. Third singles was won by Surles in shutout fashion – 6-0, 6-0.
Colin Welch claimed fourth singles with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
Jack Schwarz won fifth singles via score lines of 6-1 and 6-3. Rounding out the scoring,
Alex Rowley won by default at sixth singles.
MATCH TWO: 9-0 loss vs. Wabash
The Comets suffered an opposite run of form in the second match of the day, as they were defeated by a 9-0 scoreline to the hosts, Wabash College.
In doubles action, Abreu and Stout were knocked off 8-4, Surles and Welch were defeated 8-3, and
Aaron Askew and
Jesse Stevens were upended 8-0.
Wabash also controlled the singles play, winning all six head-to-head matches. At first singles, Abreu fought hard but in the end was defeated by Cole Borden by scores of 7-5 and 6-1. In second singles, Stout fought back from a 6-0 loss in the first set, to drop the second set 6-4. From there, Welch, Surles, Stevens, and Askew dropped their bouts in straight sets as well. The four guys won a combined seven points in their matches.

"Overall, it was a great learning experience for our young group, to play in a raucous environment against a quality opponent," continued Hurley. "We will learn from this and get back to work in preparation for OAC play later on in March."

Capital will hit the courts next on March 1st as they travel across town to pay a visit to Ohio Wesleyan. First serve on that day is scheduled for 4 p.m.
