COLUMBUS, Ohio – The occasions don't come much bigger to celebrate senior day for the Capital University men's basketball team as No. 10 ranked Mount Union paid a visit to The Capital Center on Saturday afternoon.
After honoring seniors
Keandre Graves and
Tyler Schreck prior to tip-off, the men's basketball team kept pace with the Purple Raiders, but in the end, were outmatched by the size underneath, eventually falling by a final score of 73-64.
As mentioned Capital recognized seniors Graves and Schreck prior to tip-off, while Capital Athletics also honored the senior cheerleaders Anna Bobo, Torie Cochran, Olivia Fuellgraf, and Gabriella Schnaidt at the same time.
Capital (13-9, 8-7 OAC) were led in scoring by
Joe Thompson who poured in 17 points off the bench. Following closely behind was a 12-spot from
Alex Eyink – also off the bench.
Capital was narrowly out-rebounded as a team, 34-29, but spread the wealth.
Tyler Schreck led the team with six boards, followed closely by five from Eyink, and four each from Thompson and
Griffin Doseck.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount Union (19-3, 12-3) established their presence over the first five minutes of play, taking an early 10-2 lead. Falling behind did not faze the Purple and White as they stormed back on a 12-2 run, grabbing a 14-12 lead just five minutes later.
Dom Moegerle got the run going with a jumper, which was followed by consecutive buckets from Doseck, Tompson, and Eyink.
Capital held an edge for a few minutes, but were shortly overcome again by the Purple Raiders who closed the half on a strong run, eventually heading to the locker room with a 33-26 lead.
Out of the break, Capital blistered the floor, pushing to get back into the game. Within 3:17, Cap had closed the gap to just two points as
David Sanford led a surge with two 3-pointers sandwiching a three-point-play from
Tyler Schreck.
Unfortunately for Capital, the Purple Raiders would show why they've been ranked nationally all season long by holding Cap at bay for the remainder of the game. With Capital down 49-46 after two free throws by
Ryan Roth, Mount exploded on a 11-point run that put them ahead by 14 – their largest lead of the game.
From there, Capital had moments, but ultimately were out-matched underneath as Mount was able to hold their lead for the remainder of the game. At the final buzzer, Mount emerged with the 73-64 win.
