COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University women's basketball team found themselves back in the win column on Tuesday night, taking down the Quakers of Wilmington College by a final score of 51-47. This gives the Comets their first win in OAC play and brings their record to a now 4-15 (1-10 OAC). The Quakers drop to 6-13 on the season (2-9 OAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital had a fairly consistent game overall, with solid shooting from the field and from the free throw line. The team got out to a good start in the first quarter, nearly outscoring Wilmington 2-to-1.
Maddi Weiland led the team in scoring in the first 10 minutes with four points in the period. Following the first quarter Capital led 11-6. In the second quarter Capital expanded their lead with another 2-to-1 scoring ratio.
Laney Murphy led the scoring column in the second period with six points off of two three-pointers. The Comets would take a 25-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Wilmington came out of the break to make things interesting in the second half. Taking advantage of their bench as well as an influx of Capital turnovers, the Quakers would close the gap to just three points. However, the Comets still scored a solid 13 for the quarter, enough to keep themselves ahead and carry a 38-35 lead into the final 10 minutes. In the fourth quarter Capital's defense stepped up to keep Wilmington at bay. With a narrow, one-point difference for the quarter, the Comets would hold on to claim the victory on the road, 51-47.
Capital embodied the term "spread the wealth" in this one. Seven of the eight players who saw the floor put points on the board. Five of whom scored more than six points. No one held a clear lead in scoring with the Comets rather opting for the "strength in numbers" approach. This team-first playing style kept Cap consistent from the floor and gave them plenty of chances at the charity stripe. Along with capitalizing on the fast break, these would prove to be the keys of the game for the Comets.
