COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University men's basketball team took the lead at the 13:10 mark of the first half and never looked back, despite some tense moments late on to claim a 63-51 win over Wilmington College on Tuesday evening.
Playing one night earlier than originally scheduled due to the impending inclement weather tomorrow, Capital (11-8, 6-6 OAC) got back to .500 in conference play this season and completed the series-sweep over the Quakers with the win. The series-sweep was Capital's second over Wilmington in the last five seasons.
Capital was led in the scoring column by
Griffin Doseck who poured in 12 points off the bench. He added eight rebounds and two assists to his efforts.
Behind Doseck, a quartet of Cap players contributed nicely –
David Sanford and
Ryan Roth with nine points each, and
Tyler Schreck and
Kaleb Crawford with eight points each.
Schreck also carried the team in other areas, leading the team in rebounds (10) assists (3) and blocks (2). He also had two steals to his name.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half proved to be an up-and-down battle for both teams, with Capital hitting the intermission with the 28-13 advantage. The major difference was the defensive mindset from the Purple and White, as Capital held Wilmington to just 17% from the floor and 0-for-10 from beyond the arc.
A sluggish start from both squads saw the score read 6-6 after more than six minutes of play elapsed.
Kaleb Crawford's jumper knotted the score at six-all, before back-to-back 3-pointers from
Griffin Doseck and
Ryan Roth quickly opened the spread to 12-6.
Cap eventually built out a 10-point lead at 20-10 after three free throws from Roth, a jumper from Doseck, and a 3-pointer from
Joe Thompson all connected for Capital. Unfortunately, the score would hold for more than seven minutes of play as both teams would struggle to get clean looks at the hoop.
The Purple and White eventually closed out the half on an 8-3 run, which was buoyed by a stretch of baskets from
David Sanford,
Tyler Schreck and
Dom Moegerle.
After the halftime break, Capital came out firing on all cylinders, looking to put a close to the game. They opened up their largest lead of the ball game at 49-25, after a swooshed home 3-pointer from
Ryan Roth with 11:41 left in the game.
After the bucket from Roth, Capital seemed to take their foot off the gas and Wilmington picked up their full-court press, forcing Cap to struggle late on.
What had been a 24-point lead dwindled to just 12 as the final buzzer rang, thankfully for Capital who held on, despite the tense pressure put on by the visitors.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Capital defense stepped up this evening as Cap held Wilmington to the lowest opponent field goal percentage (32.7%), three-point field goal percentage (5.9%), assists (4), and field goal makes (18).
Tyler Schreck managed his ninth game of the season with double-digit rebounds this evening.
Griffin Doseck once again put his name in the hat for sixth-man-of-the-year with a 12-point, eight-rebound performance off the bench. He has consistently played well in his role coming off the bench as tonight marked his third straight game with double figures in scoring.
THE OPPONENT
Jeffrey Mansfield put together a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Noah Dado led all players with 13 rebounds.
