Second Half Comeback Spoiled in Final Seconds for Men’s Hoops

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team erased an 18-point deficit and charged back to be in contention with the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishops on Wednesday evening, but a foul call with less than one second remaining sent OWU to the line to finish off the game 67-65.

The loss pegs Capital back to 2-1 on the young season and improves Ohio Wesleyan to 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A sluggish first half from the Comets saw them head to the locker room down 32-20. Despite that hole, the Comets were hit with an immediate pick-me-up after the intermission.

Initially, OWU got six more points to their lead through the normal flow of the game, but with Cap trailing 40-22 with 17:48 left in the game, the tides turned and Capital stormed back to eventually take a lead on a couple different opportunities late on. CU used big baskets from Carter Combs, Alex Eyink, Ryan Suever, and Joe Thompson among others to spearhead the comeback.

Eventually, Capital trailed 65-63 with just over 30 seconds left in the game. A well worked play from the Purple and White got the ball in the hands of Dom Moegerle, who hit a tough pull-up jumper to knot the score at 65-all.

After the tied game, OWU brought the ball up and put their trust in the hot-hand of Jack Clement. As the final seconds ticked away, Clement drove to the hoop and collided with Carter Combs under the basket. As a whistle blew, a frenzied Capital crowd waited for a signal from the official, who in the end decided Combs wasn't set and called a blocking foul. That call sent Clement to the line to knock down the ensuing free throws. With 0.8 seconds left on the clock after the free throws, Cap couldn't get a shot off and the buzzer sounded with OWU claiming the win 67-65 in the end.
