Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Despite a season-high in scoring from Laney Murphy and a second career double-double from freshman Samaree Perkins, the Capital University women's basketball team fell 73-62 on the road at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Capital slips back to 2-1 on the year and will look to regroup for their next road game in just three days at Wooster.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital jumped all over the Titans in the first quarter and garnered a 20-14 lead after 10 minutes. Cap fell behind 5-0 to open the game, but stormed back to tie things up at 7-7 thanks to a jumper from Nicole Flock. With that momentum, Capital used five straight points from Bri O'Connor and back-to-back threes from Samaree Perkins and Laney Murphy to storm ahead 18-9.

Eventually, after a burst of offense, a cold spell ensued for the Comets as the team went seven full minutes without a score. Thanks to two free throws from O'Connor, Cap snapped out of the funk, but found themselves trailing 37-35 at the break.

The third quarter initially looked to be a clincher for the Titans, but a 3-pointer from Murphy as time expired at the end of the frame gave the Comets life as they trailed just 54-50 at the end of three quarters.

The momentum built by Murphy's shot to end the third trickled over to the fourth as Capital brought the score as close as 59-58 in just three minutes. Unfortunately from there, the momentum fizzled out and IWU used their opportunities to put the ball in the basket and eventually walked out winners 73-62.
