Women’s Basketball Wins Big at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Capital University wrapped up their short pre-Thanksgiving road stint on Tuesday, traveling to take on the Fighting Scots of the College of Wooster. The Comets bounced back big time from their most recent result – a 62-73 loss at Illinois Wesleyan – with a huge win at Wooster, shutting down the Scots, 76-50.

The Comets continue to start the season hot, now sitting at 3-1 on the year.

Wooster falls to 1-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital fell behind early in the first quarter but a good group effort kept the Comets in contention, battling back and even leading at moments in the first ten minutes. At the first break, the Purple and White were behind by just one. Not to be understated was the effort on the defensive end, led by Maddi Wieland with three blocks in just the first period.

The second set of 10 was when CU started to get their bearings. Capital strung together a couple of quick runs en route to an eight-point lead midway through the quarter. It was another combined effort that vaulted the Comets into the lead with five different scorers sharing the rock and shooting 53.85% from the field.. On the defensive side of things Capital kept the Scots from scoring, resulting in 4-for-15 shooting for the hosts in the period; while Weiland added two more blocks to her total. At the half, Cap led 36-29.

Coming out of the half, the Comets caught fire from behind the arch, led by Kaylee Cyphers who knocked down a pair of triples in the third period. Capital continued to share the ball well which resulted in quite a large lead. Twice in the ten minutes, CU found themselves leading by twelve or more, with the majority of the quarter occurring with the Comets up by at least eight. At the end of the third quarter, Cap maintained a strong hold on the game, leading by 11.

In the final period, Capital got away for good, completely shutting down the Scots on offense. The Comets would not let Wooster make a single shot, going 0-10 and only scoring via five free throws. On the other side of the floor, Cap could not be stopped, shooting 53.33% for the quarter and breaking out to an enormous 27-point lead at one point. In the end, the deficit shrunk by just one and the Comets came out on top, 76-50.
