Elliott, Woodruff Lift Women’s Soccer to Dub Over Wilmington

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a cool Wednesday evening, the Capital University women's soccer team benefitted from goals from Lizzie Elliott and Madeline Woodruff to defeat Wilmington College 2-0.

The dub moved Capital to 6-2-1 on the year and 2-0 in the conference. Wilmington now sits at 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

The Comets garnered an early lead in just the third minute of play as freshman Lizzie Elliott – making her first career start – collected a slotted pass by Grace Estes and calmly finished past Lauren Galloway in the Quaker goal. Avery Hart's pass to Estes also earned the senior the second assist on the early go-ahead. The goal marked Elliott's first career tally in the college game.

After the early strike from Elliott, both teams struggled for chances as the teams combined for eight shot attempts, many of which fluttered off target. Comet goalie Liv Alford was sound in net making the two saves she was called to make.

Out of the halftime break, Capital played with more urgency going forward and utilized a counterattack to perfection in the 64th minute. After Madeline Woodruff won the ball back for Capital, she played a one-two pass with Avery Hart and then drilled a ball to the lower left corner of the net to double the Comet advantage. It was her third goal of the year. Hart's helper was her second of the game and the season.

The back four of Elle Pelletier, Abby English, Haley Moore, and Taylor Marcum, along with the help of defensive center midfielder Sophia Leonetti helped to limit the damage Alford faced in the Capital net. In the end, Alford did make five saves to preserve the shutout.

Wilmington's Lauren Galloway recorded four saves in the match. Maddie Scott took five shots for the Quaker offense.

Capital will stay home this Saturday, October 8th as Ohio Northern pays a visit to Bernlohr Stadium at 1 p.m. Last season, the regular season meeting between the two sides ended in a 3-3 draw and ONU emerged victorious in double overtime in the OAC Tournament, so this will surely live up to be a great match.
