Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Early Setback Dooms Men’s Soccer in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – An early red card for the Capital University men's soccer team loomed large as the Comets were upended by a final score of 2-1 away to Wilmington College on Wednesday evening.

The result pushes Capital back to 1-6-2 on the year and 0-1-1 in the OAC.

The early going went without much to talk about for either side except a third minute shot on goal by Mujahid Abdel-Ghani that was saved by Wilmington's Thomas Grimes.

From there, the Comets found the setting of the game changed drastically in the 15th minute of play as Connor Sexton was issued a red card for a desperation, last-man challenge.

That momentum swing in the game eventually benefitted the Quakers just 10 minutes later as Gio Alvarez netted the game's opening goal off a feed from Grant Murray.

Despite the Wilmington goal, Capital equalized just 55 seconds later as Abdel-Ghani leveled the match at 1-1 with an unassisted goal. The goal was Mujahid's first strike since the 2019 season when he scored in a 2-2 draw with Ohio Northern.

After halftime, the Quakers found a deciding goal as Michael Owusu put the hosts back in front in the 56th minute on an unassisted strike.

From there Wilmington set it in cruise control and saw out the game for the 2-1 victory.

In the end, Landon Hoehn made five saves in goal after Sexton's sending off to keep the Comets in the picture.

Grimes made two saves in the opposite goal for Wilmington.
