ADA, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team fell in a seven-goal thriller at Ohio Northern University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-3. All seven goals came in the second half, and all three Capital goals came courtesy of
Jack Kossoudji.
The result pegged the Comets back to 1-7-2 on the year and 0-2-1 in the OAC. ONU improves to 7-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the conference.
Kossoudji, who has had bright play all year, finally found the back of the net, and did so in a flourish.
After a Capital own goal gave the hosts a lead 19 seconds into the second half, Kossoudji took a feed from
Jacob Deever and leveled the match in the 51st minute. The assist was Deever's first career helper.
From there, the Polar Bears got goals in the 65th minute, 66th minute, and 80th minute to push ahead 4-1.
Despite the setback, a furious final 10 minutes of the match nearly sent Capital away with a point.
First, Kossoudji drew a penalty kick in the 83rd minute – one in which he stepped up to convert to bring the score to 4-2.
With this added boost, Capital kept the foot on the pedal and got another one back in the 85th minute. Deever once again set up Kossoudji, but Jack's initial shot was saved. There, Kossoudji got his own rebound and pounded the ball in the back of the net for his third of the game and first career hat-trick. The hat-trick was the first from a Comet since
Jack Francisco's three goals in the OAC Tournament at Wilmington last season.
Unfortunately, the final five minutes went without any more fireworks from either side and ONU emerged with the 4-3 victory.
By the end of the match,
Kellen Sargent made seven saves in the Capital goal – a new career-high for the junior.
For ONU, Lucas Hickey made four saves. The three second half goals were scored by Aaron Shelton, Cade Winchester, and Ryan Parker.
