Abby Brunner Named All-OAC Honorable Mention

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – For the first time since 2014, the Capital University volleyball team has an All-Conference player as announced by the Ohio Athletic Conference on Monday morning.

Selected to represent the Comets on the Honorable Mention list this season was freshman libero Abby Brunner. She is the first All-OAC player for Capital since the 2014 season in which Kelly Leonard and Katie Weilbacher were both honored that year.

This season, Brunner immediately stepped into the libero role and led the team in digs with 451 – a number good enough for fifth best in the OAC this year. Her total was the most in a single season by a Capital player since Leonard scooped up an amazing 660 in the 2014 season.

The 451 digs broke down to an average of 4.85 per set. Brunner played in 93 sets this season for the Comets, another mark that led the team, along with teammates Paree Furness and Reagan Willoughby

Elsewhere, Abby proved her ability in the receiving game as she was tested 448 times by the opposition's serving. On those tries, Brunner positively received 91.1% of her attempts.

Offensively, Brunner contributed well in the setting game, handing out 77 assists – good for third on the team.

Additionally, Brunner led the team and was second in the conference in service aces with 44. That number is the most in a single season by a Capital player since Tara Luth had 45 in 2011.

Throughout the season, Brunner set personal highs in several categories that were mightily impressive for a first year player in their debut season at the collegiate level. Those highs include digs (31 - set against St. Mary's at the Great Lakes Crossover), assists (7 - set vs. Oberlin), aces (4 - set at Kenyon), and even kills (3 - set at Wooster).

Overall this year, Brunner helped the Comets to an 8-18 record against a very difficult slate of competition.
