TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team traveled to Tiffin on Wednesday to take on the Student Princes of Heidelberg University in a midafternoon match. The Comets were firing on all cylinders as they screamed out to a 6-0 win. The Comets boasted five different goal scorers in the game as team-leading
Jack Kossoudji added two goals to his total. It was also the first time Capital scored more than five goals since September 7, 2021 against Oberlin.
The Comets are now 4-9-2 on the season, and 3-4-1 in OAC play.
Heidelberg falls to 0-16-1 (0-8-0 OAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital poured on the offensive attack early with eight shots before the clock hit the 15 minute mark. The offensive push paid off early as with that eighth shot, the Comets drew first blood and went up on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. The goal came from
Jack Kossoudji as he gained possession of the ball deep in the Heidelberg defensive zone and quickly put it past the keeper and into the lower right sector for the 1-0 lead.
It wasn't long until the Purple and White put another in, scoring just 12 minutes later on a near identical play. This time it was
Mujahid Abdel-Ghani gaining possession deep in the attacking zone and beating the keeper on the break, again into the lower right area of the net, 2-0 Comets.
Despite several chances in the remaining minutes, Capital was unable to push another goal through and the score remained 2-0 heading into the half. The Comets put up 19 shots and took a total of nine corners in the attack-heavy first period.
The Comets kept it rolling in the second half, adding another goal just over nine minutes in. This time it was
Zade Awad on the score. He received a pass across the box from
Jack Kossoudji and quickly fired it into the back of the net. It wouldn't be more than five minutes later when Kossoudji added his second of the game, assisted this time by
Brennan Hesse. All of the sudden, the Comets were up 4-0.
Speaking of Hesse, the sophomore defensive midfielder from Monroe netted his first of the season about 10 minutes later. The goal came via a lob pass by Tony Espstein from the left side of the box that seemed like it was going to be snatched up by the keeper. Suddenly Hesse jumped in front and nodded it into the goal to give Capital the 5-0 lead. In the blink of an eye
Veron Fongeh joined Hesse in scoring his first goal of the season just a minute and a half later.
Jack Francisco picked up another assist on the year with a pass to the well-positioned Fongeh waiting on the back post. Fongeh knocked it in for Cap's final goal of the game and put the game well in hand, 6-0. The final 17 minutes played out relatively uneventful and the Comets would leave Tiffin toting a well needed win.
