BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team did exactly as they had to do in order to clinch a bid into the OAC Tournament – win away to Baldwin Wallace University.
The Comets found goals – four to be exact – from reliable sources in the form of
Devon Hess,
Jack Francisco and two from
Jack Kossoudji to clinch their 17th straight trip to the conference postseason. The Comets' last year of not playing in the OAC Tournament was the 2004 season.
The Comets got on the board midway through the first half with two goals in under three minutes, thanks largely to the involvement of
Jack Francisco. The junior forward first assisted
Devon Hess's sixth goal of the season in the 26th minute before he beat a swarm of Yellow Jackets defenders to net a brilliant solo goal just 2:45 later.
Out of the break, BW was playing for their season as well and they made things difficult in the 55th minute as Julian Kieres scored off a feed from Michael Tusick to cut the Comet lead in half.
Despite their lead being halved, the Comet offense stayed composed and the reliable
Jack Kossoudji took a one touch finish off a feed from
Jacob Deever to slip past the BW goalie, re-establishing the two goal cushion at 3-1.
Again, the Yellow Jackets got one back, this time on a strike from Mike Kane in the 72nd minute.
With plenty of time to play, the Comets eventually iced the game in the 77th minute as Kossoudji worked his magic and unleashed a brilliant curling effort to the back upper corner to cap off the scoring in the game. The goal was his team-leading 10th of the year. He is Capital's first double-digit scorer in a single season since Chewy Gordon in 2018.
Connor Sexton got the nod in goal for Capital, playing the full 90 minutes and making one save on the day. In the opposite goal, Nolan Kellogg started for BW and made seven saves in goal.
The Comets will now await this evening's other OAC matches to finish up to determine their first round OAC Tournament opponent. Regardless of who the opposition is, the match will be away on Tuesday, November 1st.
