COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Marietta College on Wednesday evening via scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.
With the result, Capital falls back to 8-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference, while Marietta improves to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.
Capital found themselves in a heavy attack-minded first set, trading blows with the Pioneers. Both teams swung a .200+ hitting percentage in the first set and a late flurry of chances from Capital seemed to give the Comets a chance. With
Lindsay Rich serving, Capital staved off four set points, thanks in large part to the all around play of Rich. First, Rich landed a kil, then she aced a Pioneer, followed by a Pioneer attack error. The final point in the run again proved to be a kill from Rich. Unfortunately, a kill from Marietta's Jillian Fellers ended the comeback.
In the second set, Capital's attack petered out slightly, but in the end, they still found a way to stick around and make things difficult on the Pioneers. Back-to-back kills from
Alissa Holler and
Sydney LaPointe tied the match at 19-19, setting up an interesting final few points. However, Marietta landed four kills of their own to end the Capital momentum.
The third and final set got away from Capital early and the team just could not recover, giving the visitors the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
