MARIETTA, Ohio – Playing on the navy blue turf of Marietta College, the Capital University women's soccer team eased to a 2-0 victory over the host Pioneers on Wednesday evening courtesy of goals by
Sophia Leonetti and
Catherine Zugaro.
The win lifts the Comets to 9-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the OAC , while the Pioneers are set back to 3-9-1 on the year and 2-4 in the conference.
Capital truly dominated this evening's contest taking 30 shots, with 14 finding the frame. The effort forced Marietta's goalkeeper into 12 saves on the evening. On the other end, Capital limited Marietta to just seven shot attempts, with five being saved by
Liv Alford in goal. The saves led to Alford's third shutout of her freshman campaign.
Capital got the party started in just the third minute of play as
Sophia Leonetti collected a pass in the top corner of the box. After scrapping with a defender, Leonetti settled the ball and unleashed a perfect curling effort into the left side netting past goalkeeper Madison Miller. The goal was her third of the season.
The Comets kept the pressure up and eventually were rewarded with a second goal in the 40th minute courtesy of a brilliant deep shot from
Catherine Zugaro.
Zugaro received a pass from
Madeline Woodruff and took three touches forward and caught the Pioneer goalie off her line and lofted the ball over her head into the back of the net. The strike from Zugaro was her fourth of the season and marked Woodruff's fourth helper of the season as well.
After that, the Comets clicked it into cruise control and simply out-possessed Marietta for the remainder of the game, claiming the 2-0 win to strengthen their grip on the top of the OAC.
The back line consisting of
Haley Moore,
Abby English,
Lexi Snider and
Taylor Marcum – with the help of the midfield corps of
Francesca Longano,
Nicole Ogden and
Sophia Leonetti – helped to limit the Pioneer chances to shots from outside the 18-yard box, all of which were comfortably handled by
Liv Alford in the net.
Capital's next contest will be on the road again, this time on Saturday, October 22nd at 7 p.m. at John Carroll University.
