Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Falls to John Carroll

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University women's basketball team faced a tough test on Saturday afternoon as No. 10 John Carroll University paid a visit to the Capital Center.

The visitors showed just why they've been ranked nationally all season by shutting down the Comet offense and shooting the ball well on their own end, eventually taking the game by a final score of 74-41.

Capital's offense did get a production of points from Laney Murphy who poured in a game-high 14 points on an even 50% shooting.

Maddie Dougoud and Brooke Ommert added six and five points respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got out of the gates sluggishly as John Carroll forced them into poor shot selection. When Capital did find good opportunities, the long arms of JCU's Olivia Nagy made an appearance, blocking away three Capital shots in the first quarter alone. For Capital, Brooke Ommert and Laney Murphy were the lone two to find a bucket as each connected on a layup.

Trailing by 13 after one, Capital found similar issues in the second quarter as the visitors kept their strong defense and hot offense going. By the half, the difference was 46-18. Eventually, Cap did get going offensively, but not until the Blue Streaks had opened up their lead.

The second quarter saw baskets by Demi Brewer, Kaylee Cyphers, Maddie Dougoud, Murphy and Nicole Flock for Cap.

During the third quarter, Capital was able to keep the Blue Streaks down on the scoreboard, but still saw their own struggles at times. Despite these, Cap did get back-to-back layups from Maddie Dougoud and a pair of free throws from Kenzie Weiland that helped the team's efforts to chip away at JCU.

The fourth quarter saw Capital put together a sharper period of offense as they put up a solid period of play with players such as Erin Burns, Curstin Giffin, Kenzie Weiland, Katie Burke, and Carrie Wyman seeing extended minutes off the bench. Burns recorded four rebounds, while Carrie Wyman netted four points for Capital.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
After shooting just 15% from the floor in the first quarter, Capital got going in the second, shooting 53% from the floor. The same could be said for the second half as Cap shot just 18% from the floor in the third quarter and then turned that into 38.5% for the fourth quarter.

Capital was able to keep John Carroll's Olivia Nagy fairly quiet on the glass as Nagy recorded just eight rebounds. In the teams' first meeting this season, Nagy recorded 19 rebounds and entered the game averaging more than 13 per contest.

THE OPPONENT
John Carroll spread the wealth offensively and had just three players reach double figures in the form of Kaelyn Underwood leading the way with 12 points. Olivia Nagy and Nicole Heffington each added 10 points.
