Women’s Basketball Forces OT, but Comes Up Short

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Brooke Ommert's layup with three seconds left in regulation forced overtime, but a disappointing final five minutes led to a 69-60 loss for the Capital University women's basketball team on Wednesday night.

Playing Heidelberg University (3-10, 2-4), the Comets were pushing to find their first OAC win of the season, and Ommert's bucket looked to bring those aims into reality. Unfortunately for the Purple and White, Heidelberg came out the aggressor and foul trouble sent three Comets out of the game and enabled the Student Princes emerge with the nine-point win.

Several Comets (3-11, 0-6) had decent showings in the game. Laney Murphy paced the team in scoring with 15 points, while Brooke Ommert had 12 rebounds. Demi Brewer finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Maddi Weiland ended the game with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, one steal, and five blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams scrapped it out across the first half, taking a 27-24 scoreline to the break in favor of the visitors. Out of the halftime intermission, both teams looked poised to open up the game, but again, the teams stayed stride-for-stride. Both teams scored 20 points each in the third quarter of play.

In the fourth, Capital made their push. The frame opened up on Maddi Weiland's good 3-pointer and was followed up by a jumper from Demi Brewer that kept Cap in range of the Student Princes.
As time ticked away, Heidelberg clung to a three point lead with 1:19 remaining. Kaylee Cyphers made arguably her biggest basket of the evening with a strong contested layup to close within one.

The Comets then forced the ball into the hands of Elisha Carter who split her free throw attempts, putting the visitors back up by two.

On their final possession, Brewer – who passed out her career-best seven assists on the evening – passed up an open jumper and found Brooke Ommert under the hoop. Ommert squeezed the layup up-and-in to tie the score at 57-57 to force OT.

There, Heidelberg mashed the gas and blitzed Capital for 12 points in the five minutes of action. Katie Burke hit a 3-pointer for Cap's only bucket of the period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Capital held the narrow advantage on rebounds by a margin of 38-37. Brooke Ommert's 12 boards tied a career-high. She had 12 rebounds vs. Fredonia on November 19, 2019.

Maddi Weiland has begun to truly settle into her role in the starting rotation as she has consistently found a way to find the stat sheet. Tonight, she marked career-bests in rebounds (8) and blocks (5).

THE OPPONENT
Heidelberg was led in scoring by Lily Sweeney who poured in 23 points, which included a 6-for-7 effort from deep. Ashley Ballard had a team-best 11 boards.

UP NEXT
Capital will return home this Saturday, January 15th to face the No. 15 ranked Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets in a 2 p.m. matinee tip-off. The women's contest will immediately precede the men's game which will begin at approximately 4 p.m. in the Capital Center.
