Men’s Soccer Obliterates Oberlin in 5-0 Win

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team returned to the field on Wednesday taking on the Yeomen from Oberlin College.

The Purple and White wasted no time in getting back to top form as they continually sent a barrage of balls towards the Oberlin keeper, taking a total of 20 shots, 13 of which were on target. Five of those balls would end up finding the back of the net as the Capital men cruised to a 5-0 victory.

The scoring started early with sophomore Jarrett Puckett netting a breakaway goal in the 21st minute, his first of the campaign. This was followed shortly by senior Sam Spirk sending one past the keeper in the 25th minute, tying him for the team scoring lead with two goals on the season. The assist came in the form of a cross from fellow scoring leader, sophomore Jack Francisco. In the 34th minute, senior Mitch Hughes scored a highlight goal, putting one in from the corner with the help of a ricochet off of an Oberlin defender. To round off the first half scoring, senior Bailey Lach would send a long pass into the box that would be headed in by Veron Fongeh with 1:27 to spare, giving him his first score of the season and of his college career.

Capital would continue to increase its lead in the second half as Fongeh would net another goal in the 73rd minute. This would also tie him for the team lead with the aforementioned Jarrett Puckett and Jack Francisco. The assist would go to Matt Scheper with the hockey assist going to Devon Hess

With the victory well in hand, the Purple and White defense would stand up and shut out the Yeomen in the second half, bringing the game to a close at 5-0.

With two goals on the day, freshman Veron Fongeh made a great case for man of the match, bursting onto the scene with an outstanding performance.

Capital looks to add to its two-game hot streak this Saturday, September 11, at 3 p.m. as they take on Washington & Jefferson at Bernlohr Stadium.
