COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team began their home schedule today, facing the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson at Bernlohr Stadium.
The Purple and White were in top form from the very beginning, dominating possession and taking good care of the ball in the first half. A fast break offensive attack based on long passes over the top led to many chances in the early minutes.
Capital would finally break into the scoring column in the 29th minute when freshman sensation
Veron Fongeh used his head to put one past the keeper off of a corner kick from senior
Mitch Hughes. This would give Fongeh his third goal of the season and give Hughes his second assist.
The second strike came 15 minutes later as freshman
Colin McComb beat the keeper off of an assist from fellow freshman
Keegan Reese, scorching one right down the middle. This would be McComb's first of two goals in the game, bringing the score to 2-0 at the halfway mark.
The Capital attack continued in the second half as senior
Sam Spirk blasted a shot into the upper left corner in the 49th minute, giving Cap a three goal lead. This goal came off of an assist from fellow senior
Bailey Lach, his first of two assists in the game.
Capital would increase its lead for the fourth and final time as
Colin McComb would score his second goal of the game in the 71st minute. The assist came from the aforementioned
Bailey Lach, bringing the final score to an impressive 4-0 victory.
The freshmen were on full display in this one, accounting for three of the team's four goals. This was also Capital's second consecutive game with a freshman scoring two goals, the first coming against Oberlin with
Veron Fongeh putting two in the back of the net.
The team play was nothing short of spectacular as Capital collectively fired 31 shots, 15 of which were on target, outshooting their opponents 31-2. The Purple and White had their fair share of corner kicks as well, totaling 13, all of which were taken by
Mitch Hughes.
Today's win brings Capital's overall record to 4-0-0, a stellar start to what is sure to be a memorable season. The four goals scored by the Purple and White bring their season total to 14. With only one goal conceded on the season, their goal differential is now +13.
The Capital men will look to retain their undefeated status on Tuesday, September 14, in Granville, Ohio as they travel to take on the Big Red of Denison. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
