DEFIANCE — The Capital University men's soccer team jumped out to 2-0 record to start the season, courtesy of a 2-0 victory over the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon.
Playing just one day after defeating Defiance College, Capital held off a challenging opponent in Wooster and made their chances count. The Scots led the game with 16 efforts toward goal, including six on target, but failed to score. Cap mustered just eight shots, with half of their chances coming on target and two of them finding the back of the net.
In the 14th minute of action, sophomore midfielder
Jack Kossoudji burst through midfield and got on the end of a misplayed ball in the box to put Capital ahead early. Kossoudji was alert and finished his first goal of the season when the Wooster defense muffed a clearance after
Sam Spirk played a ball across goal. Spirk was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Purple and White carried that lead into the second half, where they would soon double the advantage. In the 48th minute, Spirk would get a goal of his own in scrappy fashion. After
Mitch Hughes delivered a free kick into the box, the ball bounced around and Spirk muscled his way to get a head on it. His header eluded the charging Wooster keeper and barely crossed the line, pushing Cap ahead 2-0.
Freshmen goalkeeper
Brady Frydl started in goal for Capital and made six saves on the afternoon. Fellow freshman goalie,
Landon Hoehn came on in the 88th minute to make his collegiate debut and help preserve the shutout.
Wooster' Jason Prather started in goal and made two saves. Offensively, both Max Hill and Wilson Freije had three shots.
Capital will continue their burst of games early in the season as they travel to Oberlin College on Tuesday, September 7th. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
