COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Tuesday evening, the Capital University volleyball team blew away the Ladies of Kenyon College by a margin of three sets to none.
Capital (3-7) took the sets in order by scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-13.
On the day,
Delanie Nahikian once again led the team and all players with 13 kills. Nahikian hit an astounding .500 hitting percentage as she had just one error on 24 swings.
Sydney LaPointe added nine kills as well.
Caleigh Hamby was next for Cap with seven kills, including five in the first set alone. Hamby hit a solid .333 clip.
Freshman
Jordyn Hoffman took the setting duties all the way around the court and dished up 34 assists, collected two kills and swatted back three blocks.
Defensively,
Erin O'Connell helped clean up matters with 19 digs.
Michaela Recker (8) and Nahikian (7) accounted for the next most digs. At the net, Capital had eight total blocks. In addition to Hoffman's three, Hamby had three of her own and
Alissa Holler and
Lindsay Rich combined for the other.
Capital absolutely dominated the first and third sets, playing clean volleyball all around. The second set provided more of a test and Kenyon (2-10) put together their best play in the middle frame. Late in the set, the Ladies built an 18-14 lead, forcing Capital to call a timeout.
Out of that timeout, Capital put together three straight points to close the gap. Eventually, an attack error by Kenyon tied the match at 21-all. An Elyse Davidson kill put Kenyon ahead by one, but four consecutive points pushed the set in favor of CU late on.
Delanie Nahikian and
Sydney LaPointe sandwiched a pair of Lady errors to settle the set.
Capital closed things out in the third set rather calmly with some impressive defense and with the benefit of a handful of Kenyon misplays.
All-in-all, Capital controlled the tempo of the match for their second consecutive home win in the Capital Center Performance Arena.
Leading the Ladies were Elyse Davidson (nine kills), Ellie Luciani (10 digs), and Jac Cousineau (22 assists).
Capital returns to the court on Saturday as Baldwin Wallace will make an appearance in the Capital Center for a 1 p.m. first serve. The match will serve as Capital's second OAC match of the season after they played ONU last weekend.
