ADA, Ohio -- The Capital University women's volleyball team had a tough match-up on Saturday afternoon as they first took on the No. 12 Ohio Northern University and then faced Bluffton University, both of which went in favor of the opponent.
First, Capital (2-7, 0-1), lost to ONU in straight sets before taking Bluffton to four sets.
Match One: ONU wins 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-14)
It was a tough day offensively as the Purple and White had a completion percentage of just .113, connecting on 33 kills of 106 attempted, committing 21 errors in the process. This compared to ONU's completion percentage of .308 (42 K, 107 TA, 9 E), only added to a long day for Capital.
Junior outside hitter
Sydney LaPointe led the Purple and White in kills with 10. She was followed closely by senior
Delanie Nahikian (8) and sophomore
Lindsay Rich (7).
In the assists category Capital was led by setting duo
Jordyn Hoffman and
Jenay Kocsis. Hoffman, a freshman, secured the game high with 16. Kocsis, a senior, was right behind her with 13. Defensively, Capital was led by the reliable
Erin O'Connell as she scooped up 15 digs. Nahikian added 14 digs for Cap. At the net, Nahikian and
Caleigh Hamby combined for the lone block of the match.
One area in which the Purple and White were able to hold their own was serving aces. They finished the game with six, nearly matching the seven from the Polar Bears.
Match Two: Bluffton wins 3-1 (25-18, 14-25, 25-16, 25-18)
Much like the first match, Capital struggled offensively hitting at a mere .153 percentage as opposed to Bluffton's .311 clip. Despite committing a much fewer 18 errors, Capital only landed 40 kills on 144 attacks.
The steady offensive prescence of Nahikian was once again felt as the all-around player led the team with 15 kills. Rich (8) and Hamby (7) were next on the team in the kills category. Hoffman and Kocsis once again shared the setting duties and split the assists evenly at 13 each.
In the back row, O'Connell once again led the way with 18 digs, while
Miranda Jordan collected 11 digs of her own. At the service line, Capital both excelled and faltered, collecting nine aces and nine errors. Jordan had three aces, whiel Kocsis,
Alissa Holler, and O'Connell each had two aces. Up front defensively, Holler and Rich combined for the lone block in the match.
