Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second Half Comeback Falls Just Short For Men’s Soccer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A beautiful fall evening set the scene for a marquee match-up between men's soccer perennial powers -- Case Western Reserve University and Capital University -- on Saturday.

The marquee part of the match-up did not disappoint as the game featured seven goals and some strong midfield play at moments on both sides of the ball.

CWRU grabbed the lead early in the game with a right-place, right-time goal by Jacob Hall. Hall happened to find himself on top of the six-yard box, unmarked and tapped in a cross from Jad Oglesby.
The game would ride scoreless to the break with Case Western Reserve taking the halftime lead at 1-0.

Capital emerged from the break on the front foot, looking to work back into the match. Unfortunately, though, the steam was counter-acted by two quickfire goals from CWRU. First, Hall grabbed his second of the game, by again finding himself in the right place at the right time. This time, he cleaned up an errant attempt from Matt Vatne to double the advantage. Shortly after going 2-0 up, CWRU added a third as Vatne served in a corner kick that was headed home by Henry Barnes.

Now trailing by three goals, the climb became greater for Cap, but the hosts kept the pressure and pushed forward, looking for a way back in the match.

Those efforts back in the match looked to be all for not as CWRU tacked on what would prove to be a crucial fourth goal. Sean Atwater slid a ball through for Brandon Kim to slot past the charging Kellen Sargent in goal.

Less than two minutes after Kim's goal, Capital finally found their breakthrough and chance back into the match. After the Spartans were whistled for a foul in the box, Jack Francisco slid home his third goal of the season from the penalty mark.

Capital stayed on the gas and delivered another goal, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Bailey Lach served a dime of a ball to the back post where Mitch Hughes awaited to calmly head home his second goal of the season.

The comeback continued as Capital scrapped and fought for another goal to finish the near impossible comeback. Eventually, CWRU was whistled for another foul in the area, leading to another Francisco penalty kick, but the third goal would prove to be too-little, too-late as Capital ran out of time.

In the end, the Spartans held on for the 4-3 win and held the edge in better chances to score and narrowly won the possession battle with 52% of the ball.

Sargent tallied two saves in net for Capital, while Majd Awad had two clearances off the line during the game. Sam Rojanasakdakul tallied two saves for the Spartans.

Capital returns to the field on Wednesday, September 29th as they host the top-10 ranked Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will serve as the conclusion to the non-conference schedule for Capital this season.
