COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University men's soccer team looked to get back to good form on Saturday when they took on the Wittenberg University Tigers for a matinee match at Bernlohr Stadium.
Neither side was willing to give an inch in this one. A back and forth battle from the beginning, the game could have gone either way. Both keepers were busy in the first half, the teams totaling a combined 16 shots, Capital taking the majority of those with nine (four on target). The closest call came in the form of a ball from senior
Sam Spirk that slammed off the inside of the right goalpost and bounced away harmlessly. The half would end 0-0.
The second half was a slightly different story as the Purple and White began to pull away in terms of possession and scoring opportunities. Capital took 10 shots in the period (six on target), wearing down the Tiger defense. The tie was finally broken in the 59th minute when sophomore sensation
Jack Kossoudji buried one into the lower right corner off of a rebound of a
Sam Spirk shot. Capital would shut down multiple retaliation attempts on the way to a 1-0 victory.
Sam Spirk and
Jack Kossoudji led the Capital attack, each having multiple close chances on the offensive, evenly splitting a combined eight shots (each had two on target). On the defensive side of the ball, freshman goalkeeper
Landon Hoehn made his starting debut for the team with a stellar shutout performance. Hoehn made four saves and faced a total of eight shots from the Tigers, playing the full 90 minutes.
The Capital men look to continue their new win streak on Saturday as they take on the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University at Bernlohr Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
