COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team won its first postseason contest in more than 15 years with its down-to-the-wire victory over Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders took down the Yellow Jackets, 5-4, in the quarter-final round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, hosted by Capital at the Scarborough East Indoor Tennis Courts in Columbus.

The backend of the Crusader lineup made the difference in Capital's come-from-behind victory. Capital began strongly with a pair of wins on the doubles circuit. Cap notched the first two points of the contest with wins coming from the tandems of Rachel Smith and Maggie Haas (def. L. Cole/K. Yates, 8-6) on court two, and Amy Wright-Lovell and Karen Kanke (def. J. Penrod/G. Upholzer, 8-4) on court three.

With a 2-1 lead coming out of the turn, Baldwin Wallace tied it up with a win on court three when Kierstyn Yates defeated Rachel Smith, 6-1, 6-0. The Yellow Jackets then took the lead with a win in the top-billed match with Jayde Robinson's victory over Maria Sadek (6-0, 6-2), but it was short-lived following Amy Wright-Lovell's performance on court five, a win over Juliet Penrod, 6-2, 6-0.

Baldwin Wallace retook the lead when Gabriela Heidelman claimed victory over Kelli Wright-Lovell, 6-3, 6-1. Down to their last two matches, Karen Kanke and Josie Nichols were the two Crusaders left to battle for the right to advance.

Both matches went three sets and on each court, Capital emerged victorious. On court six, Karen Kanke outlasted Gina Upholzer, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, tying the match at four. Josie Nichols remained on court four with all eyes on her bout with Lizzy Cole. The freshman fell in the first set, 7-5, but then rallied back to win the second and third sets, decisively, 6-2 and 6-1. With the win on court four, the Crusaders earned the fifth and final point, plus the path to Mason, Ohio for the OAC Tournament semifinals.

Capital (4-3), the fourth seed in this year's tournament, will now head off to play top-seeded John Carroll (7-0) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in the next round of play. That match will take place on Friday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.

Live stats will be available for the match.
