MARIETTA, Ohio – For the first time since 2018 the Capital University men's tennis program enjoyed the taste of victory. The Crusaders used a strong start to propel them to their first win of the season, a 6-3 victory over Marietta College at the Beren Tennis Center.
This win comes nearly three years to the day since Capital's last victory which came on April 23, 2018 when the Crusaders defeated Heidelberg, 9-0, in Columbus. The program would then go on hiatus for two-plus seasons between roster shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tuesday's match began with a complete sweep through doubles play and a 3-0 Capital advantage. Court one set the tone when
Graeme Green and
Ven Naik defeated the combination of Ali Al Saffar and Spencer Hall, 8-2.
Aaron Askew and
Nathan Hartzler teamed up on court two and battled Eric DeLong and Nathan Hanning to an 8-5 win. Completing the sweep was
Josh Aude and
Jack Schwarz, who defeated Kylar Wheeler and Tyler Wise, 8-4.
Capital and Marietta split the singles circuit with each team claiming three courts. Hartzler and Green earned wins in flights five and one, respectively, which helped CU claim the match early. Hartzler defeated Ali Al Saffar, 6-1, 6-0, while Green took down Eric DeLong by the same score.
Ven Naik continued the streak of six consecutive victories with his victory over Spencer Hall, 6-3, 6-1, on court two. Marietta then made a run with three straight win on courts three, four and six. Two of those singles matches were decided in a super tiebreaker, and a third required extra points.
Aaron Askew was beaten by Tyler Wise (6-1, 5-7, 10-5) while
Jack Schwarz took an early lead but was outlasted by Nathan Hanning (2-6, 6-4, 10-8).
Josh Aude lost to Kyler Wheeler, 6-2, 7-5, in the final singles match of the afternoon.
Capital (1-3) will take to the courts at Wolfe Park in Bexley for its next contest and final home match on Saturday, April 25. The Crusaders will take on the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union with a 1 p.m. first service. Capital will honor and recognize its seniors,
Graeme Green and
Nathan Hartzler,
