BEXLEY, Ohio –  UNBEATEN NO MORE! On Saturday afternoon, the Capital UNiversity Women's Lacrosse team rallied in the second half to overcome six goal deficit to knock off the previously undefeated John Carroll University by a final score of 18-17.
Kathryn Walton scored off a feed from
Brooke Delara for the all-important game-winning goal with just 1:09 remaining in the game. The goal was Walton's third and Delara's fifth helper of the game.Â
Luci Kanowsky led the Crusaders (10-2) with six goals and an assist offensively. Walton added three goals and two assists. Delara chipped in with two goals and five assists.
Skyla Caito had three goals and one helper.
Dylan Smith and
Brianna Rampi both had two goals and one assist.
Bee Kuehn stopped 11 shots in the cage for Capital.Â
The Crusaders found themselves behind by a slight 11-8 margin at halftime after an exciting, yet lengthy first half of play. Kanowsky's first of the rally was a man-down goal, pushing Capital forward even more.Â
John Carroll (13-1) put a halt to the Purple and White's comeback efforts as Colleen Grombala sandwich a
Luci Kanowsky tally with two goals of her own. Kendall Gessner then scored quickly to push the game to what many thought out of Capital's reach at 17-15 with 4:25 remaining.Â
However, the Crusaders blitzed JCU for three quickfire goals in just 1:59 of game time. Caito, Kanowsky and Walton all found the back of the net to push Capital ahead.Â
Alex Lowry followed up Walton's game-winner with an all-important draw control that enabled JCU to hold off the Blue Streaks. The control was Lowry's 10th of the game in what proved to be a hefty battle in the draw circle all evening long.
Further helping matters in Capital's favor was the defensive efforts. Kat Walton had four ground ball pickups, and three Crusaders --
Molly Searles,
Brooke Delara, and
Skyla Caito -- all contributed two caused turnovers each.Â
For the visitors, Grombala led the team with six goals, four of which came via the free position line. Mary Doherty, Kendall Gessner, and Claire Mezzoprete all chipped in three goals each.Â
The game proved to be intense for more reasons than the enthralling second half comeback. Both teams combined for 55 fouls including eight yellow cards and two green cards. The game also featured 23 free-position attempts, 12 of which were converted between the two teams.Â
In addition to the excitement on the field, Capital Atheltics and head coach
Stacey Florence hosted senior day for
Brianna Rampi, Kat Walton,
Brooke Delara,
Alex Lowry, and
Dana Stover prior to the game.Â
Capital will look to carry on winning ways as they travel to Heidelberg on Wednesday, April 21 for a 7 p.m. first draw.Â
