ADA, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team had their chances to advance to the OAC title game this Sunday, but after 110 minutes of play and 12 rounds of penalties those chances were dashed at the hands of Ohio Northern University.
With the score tied at zeros at the end of regulation, penalty kicks were called upon to decide a winner. Tied at 4-4 after the first five rounds, both sides traded efforts the remainder of the way resulting in a 9-8 edge in favor of the host Polar Bears after 12 kicks per team.
Gabbi Viggiano,
Lexi Snider,
Madeline Woodruff,
Sophia Leonetti,
Avery Hart,
Jayde Hoffmann,
Holly Barlage, and
Lauren White all converted for the Crusaders in the shootout.
With the win, Ohio Northern advances to Sunday's final to face off against Otterbein.
As seen in their regular season match-up, both teams matched up fairly evenly throughout. At half, Capital held the slight advantage in shot attempts at 4-2, with
Olivia Rotolo's fifth minute effort and Siena Ward's 17th minute chance being the lone two to find the frame.
The second half proved to be much of the same, even affairs. At the end of regulation, both teams had nine shots, three shots on target, three saves, and seven fouls each. Capital held one advantage -- five corner kicks compared to ONU's one.
Jayde Hoffmann may have had the Purple and White's best chance in the second half in the 58th minute. The senior found herself open at the back post on a corner, but her header went agonizingly over the crossbar.
Capital gained a slight edge in the first period of overtime outshooting the Polar Bears 3-2 in the 10 minute stanza. Both
Gabbi Viggiano and
Avery Hart had low, driven shots that were stopped by ONU goalie Kristy Catrine.
Looking to find the breakthrough, the Crusaders dominated the second period of overtime, but failed to come through with the decisive moment. Viggiano's drive from distance was the best chance in the 107th minute of play.
Without a goal across the game's first 110 minutes, penalty kicks were needed to decide matters. There, ONU prevailed via the 9-8 margin after 12 rounds of kicks.
Lauren White managed four saves in goal for Capital, including an additional three in the shootout. Catrine stopped six shots in the opposing goal, and had three saves herself in the shootout.
The tied score after regulation means Capital ends the season 7-2-1.
