MARIETTA, Ohio –  The Capital University baseball team headed south to take on nationally-ranked Marietta College on Don and Sue Schaly Field at Pioneer Stadium. The fifth-ranked Pioneers defeated the Crusaders by scored of 11-1 (F/8) and 14-4 (F/8) on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1 | L 11-1 (F/8)
Though Capital did not get on the board until the middle of game one, the Crusaders kept within one run of the Pioneers until a five-run bottom of the fifth.
Logan White tied the game with a solo home run to left field, his second of the season, just before the outburst.
Tucker Craft (L, 0-4) cruised through the opening four inning. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Marietta pounded out four consecutive hits, including a two-run single by Brady Cottom during that streak. The Pioneers then displayed some key two-out hitting when Turner Hill hit a two-run single through the right side, following by an RBI single by Jared Weiss.
That frame served as the first of four consecutive innings in which Marietta scored, and between the fifth and eighth innings, the Pios scored 10 of its 11 runs. With Weiss' run-scoring sacrifice fly in the eighth, the game ended early by an 11-1 final.
GAME 2 | L, 14-4 (F/8)
Marietta burst out of the gates with a six-run first inning against Capital starter
Jared Heidecker (L, 1-4). Two innings later, Marietta tagged on three more runs to increase its lead to nine before getting out of the third.
Capital's run production came via a pair RBI doubles by Brendon Stinson, coming in the fourth and eighth, and one by
Cole Callaghan in the fifth inning. Marietta's Nicklaus Brown (W, 3-0) went six innings while Isaac Danford cleaned up the last two. The duo combined to surrender seven hits and four runs.
Marietta tallied 14 runs on 12 hits and benefitted from three Capital errors.
Capital and Marietta will meet again on Sunday at Clowson Field for two more games. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m., a change from its originally scheduled time.
