Early Goal Looms Large in Men’s Soccer 1-0 Defeat

NEW CONCORD, Ohio –  The Capital University men's soccer team was upended away to Muskingum University thanks to a second minute tally by the hosts. With the loss, Capital drops to 2-4 with just three games left in the season. The win was Muskingum's first of the year.

The Muskies wasted no time getting ahead as Abdikani Mohamed cleaned up a blocked shot from Logan Gray after just 1:20 of the game had elapsed. Mohamed's strike was his first goal and just the team's second goal of the season.

With the early advantage, the Muskies found a way to fend off the Crusaders' attack for the remainder of the contest. The Capital offense forced seven saves out of the Muskingum netminder, Damon Spaeth. The bulk of the Crusaders' chances came from the efforts of Mitchell Hughes and Jack Francisco who combined to draw four stops from Spaeth.

As Capital pushed for an equalizer and the Muskies anchored in, the game found a physical side late on. The game saw a total of 29 fouls called, seven of which came in the game's final moments. In the 89th minute, Jarrett Puckett found himself tripped up from behind in front of the benches sparking a brief scuffle which led to Capital being reduced to 10 men for the final minutes.

In goal, Kellen Sargent collected four stops on the evening, bringing his season save count to 16.

The Crusaders will be back home at Bernlohr Stadium on Monday, April 5 at 7 p.m. as they welcome Ohio Northern University.
